Mid-America Institute on Aging and Wellness - MAIA

Mid-America Institute on Aging and Wellness - MAIA MAIA, co-sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana and SWIRCA & More, is a two-day conference promoting healthy aging and wellness.

The College of Nursing and Health Professions initially created the Center for Healthy Aging and Wellness in 2008 to serve as co-sponsor and host of the annual Mid-America Institute on Aging. Since then, the Center has evolved into a dynamic institution of interdisciplinary education, research, and community partnerships that advocates for older adults and promotes careers in gerontology and geriatrics.

A week from today (Wednesday, August 6), we will kick things off with a FREE Circle of Friends® Facilitator Training, offered this year as a special pre-conference workshop. Nursing home staff, community members and older adults interested in implementing this program are invited to attend at no cost, thanks to the USI Bronstein Center for Healthy Aging and Wellness and the GWEP.

Then next Thursday and Friday (August 7-8), join us in the University Center for a dynamic conference, featuring expert talks on all things related to aging and healthy living! Whether you're a retiree, student, caregiver or health professional, there's something for you at MAIA!

This film examines social scientist Robert Putnam's "Bowling Alone" theory and the impact of declining community engagement.

Introducing "MAIA Monday" in anticipation of this year's Mid-America Institute on Aging and Wellness! Follow along with us every Monday for a sneak peek of this year's conference.

We will kick things off at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 7 with a keynote presentation by Jeremy Holloway, PhD, of New Mexico Highlands University. He'll offer us solutions to isolation and loneliness for caregivers and older adults. It is a pleasure to announce the closing keynote speaker for this year's MAIA conference, Joanna LaFleur. After receiving a degree in Recreational Therapy from Eastern Michigan University, Joanna jumped into the eldercare field head first and has worked with people living with dementia and their caregivers for two decades. Her desire to create positive change in this area can also be felt through her articles, videos, social media content, and training and speaking engagements.

🔍🩺 Do you need help understanding your health insurance? With the ever-changing environment of healthcare regulation, it can be difficult to know what decisions will have the most positive outcome for you as an individual.

Gina Downs, who has 18 years of experience navigating the intricacies of the insurance industry, will be at this year's MAIA conference to give individuals and caregivers a better understanding of how the most recent legislation impacts our senior community, both positively and negatively.💡

With changes coming to Medicare, we are fortunate to have Gina explain what people need to know before their enrollment period later this year. MAIA attendees will even have the opportunity to attend a follow-up session with Gina (date TBD) to get all their questions answered! 👏
