Taking active steps can help slow down the progression of CKD! But, where do we start?
1. Managing your blood pressure - Our kidneys help manage blood pressure. This means that having consistently irregular or high blood pressures can put a greater strain on the kidneys, and lead to increased strain and damage over time. Managing your blood pressure with medications, lifestyle modifications, and regular screening can be a great first step for many people with kidney disease.
2. Managing your blood sugar and diabetes - our kidneys work to filter toxins and sugar from our blood. High blood sugar levels can make this job more difficult, forcing our kidneys to work overtime. Managing and monitoring your blood sugars and staying consistent with your care can help reduce the risk of long-term damage.
3. Choosing a kidney-friendly diet - What we eat plays a big impact on how our body functions, including our kidneys. By choosing a kidney-friendly diet, we can help prevent added strain on our kidneys. This can include reducing salt and sugar intake, adjusting our protein sources, reducing processed foods, and so much more. Be sure to speak to your provider regarding what dietary changes are best for your situation.
