Amen
I think it's fair to say that most established lash techs are so used to the " stigma" that we are just "plopping" lashes on when we apply a set.
Not much skill goes into it, we just sit over the client, grab a lash and stick it on.
We continue until the set looks full, the client pays and off they go.
How difficult can it really be when that's all we do?
It used to really frustrate me when those around me didn't take my job seriously - or clients wanted to pay $20 dollars for my work, despite it taking me hours and the heavy investments I'd made into building my business, using only the best products, being fully insured and having my clients health and safety at the top of my list of priorities.
So what do we REALLY do as lash techs.
Firstly we invest our own money to take a course, where we must learn to use both hands and hold precisely two pairs of super sharp tweezers and not stab our client with them.
On leaving our course we practice daily the new skills we learnt, we work for either free or minimum wage just to get our practice in.
We spend our free time hunting out any bit of new info, trying new products, new techniques, dreaming of lashes.
Our skill:
Every client is bespoke - as such we create a look for them, we learn to assess the correct use of curl, thickness, length, style, adhesive, pads for that client. It is never one look suits all but we create a bespoke effect. One look suits all requires no skill, but the ability to assess all the above requires knowledge from that tech, that knowledge takes years to learn and again heavy investment. And also that we isolate our EVERY 80-120 nl in that set !!!! That's skill !
A " good" set of lashes can take anything from 2-4 hours to apply ( classic to volume )
Let's average this at a client every 2.5 hours over an 8 to 10 hour day - that technically only 3/4 clients per day.
Imagine if we charged $20 dollars, our max earning would be $80 for a 10 hour day.
Take out cost of products, insurance, salon running etc, approx $30 - so a take home of $50 - who can live on that!!!!! So you can see why the stigma of pooping lashes on and being ask to do them for $20 used to really frustrate me......
