Research shows that Reiki used as a complementary therapy in chronic health conditions improves outcomes. It has been shown to have efficacy in easing and managing conditions like depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and improving physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. It is likely that Reiki’s impact on parasympathetic nervous system activation is part of the reason it works. When our nervous systems are calm and at ease, it open the way for healing to take place in the body. Having Reiki before medical treatments could calm the nervous system enough to allow the intervention to have greater effectiveness.

Now imagine pairing Reiki with another modality, sound healing, that also is showing great promise in easing a number of conditions. These therapies, if included regularly alongside traditional medical therapies could have profound impact in healing and wellbeing.

Experience both of these healing modalities in one session. Join us for our Deep Relaxation Reiki Sound Bath offered several times monthly. Check our Classes page for upcoming dates.

I found this book among my mother’s things as we’ve been slowly sorting through the remnants of her life. I’ve been reading it every morning as part of my daily mini-habits, and it has brought to the forefront of my mind this idea of longevity.

Our culture is having a renewed love affair with the idea of living forever. It seems an obvious longing, this quest for immortality, especially given the uncertainty many have of what comes after this life. Perhaps the desire to live forever is simply the avoidance of what we don’t know. Still, this push for longevity is at a fevered pitch these days, and not once have I heard anyone ask the most important question:

WHY?

Exactly why do we want to live so long? In some ways as denizens of this culture of consumption we are simply doing what we were taught to do: consume. Energy, food, water, entertainment, the pain of others, the resources of this planet,…time. We gobble up years without a thought to WHY we are here.

Have we thought about what it means if we do live longer? Consume longer? Need income longer? Need meaning and a purpose longer?

Are we barking up the wrong tree?

Perhaps our quest for longer lives isn’t that at all, but rather a quest for more meaningful lives. My mother lived to almost 91 and had a very full life. My father is nearly 92 and still plays golf, dances, starts new things, has a strong community around him. And both of them regularly from about their mid-80’s said, “I don’t want to live forever. I’ve had a good life.” I hear this from many of my clients who are in their mid-80’s and beyond.

Perhaps a life well-lived — fully lived — is a life that doesn’t need extension. Perhaps a culture that could accept aging as the natural turning of seasons instead of a pathology could embrace its elders instead of marginalizing them.

What exactly would you do with your life if you had more years? What would light you up every day?

And why aren’t you doing it NOW?

P.S. The watercolor in the background is one of my mom that I painted this year. I paint every day — part of my ikigai.

Nature has a profound impact on our nervous systems. Water, the quality of light, natural textures, plants and more can calm us, make us more creative, improve our mood, and make us more receptive to healing. Can you imagine what happens when you embed healing services within a beautiful nature filled environment that starts before you even walk in the door and continues through the space?

Big thank you to Pete The Green House who repotted and fed all our plants to keep them happy and thriving, so they can keep YOU happy and thriving. We appreciate his loving attention to our plant friends. They are an important part of our center and the healing that happens here. It takes a village. ❤️
