June 10 was a stormy night, yet the stars aligned as the past Presidents of the Society gathered for comaraderie and appreciation of a "non-dental" topic. We were joined by "Caroline Herschel" the first salaried female Astronomer. She told us about her life from scullery maid to astronomer, and the challenges faced by an 18th century woman who discovered 8 comets. Her record stood for almost 200 years until broken by Carolyn Shoemaker in the 1980's!

State Representative Melissa Shusterman was unable to make our May meeting but was just as excited to have her Community Recognition Award hand delivered by Dr. Himmelgerger!
This award is presented to an individual who has exemplified themselves by outstanding services to the community. The Annual Awards Committee may select a recipient who, in its judgment, has led an effort to pass major legislation for the protection and enhancement of the oral health of citizens of Pennsylvania, led a regional access to dental care effort for the under-served populations, or played a leading role and personally made a significant contribution in the education of the public regarding the importance of good oral health and/or public health policy.
Representative Shusterman is an advocate for common sense policies that prioritize people before politics. First elected to represent Pennsylvania's 157th district in 2018, she quickly established herself as an asset to House leadership. She has championed PDA’s legislative initiatives, including the virtual credit card bill. This legislation amended that insurance code to allow dentists to opt out of accepting card credit payments as payment for patient claims.

🕯️Today, we remember the victims of 9/11 and honor the first responders. We also reflect on the role dental professionals quietly played in helping families find closure through forensic identification.

Dr. Linda Himmelberger, Dr. Michael Cerveris and Dr. Ronald Bushick, all past presidents of PDA, were part of the Pennsylvania Dental Identification Team (PADIT) to assist with the Flight 93 identification efforts.
