When an individual is diagnosed with breast cancer at any stage, their oncologist will run tests to determine the cancer’s molecular subtype and possibly order additional molecular tests to characterize the cancer. There are several different molecular subtypes of breast cancer and these subtypes are based on the genes the cancer cells express, which in turn controls how the cancer cells behave. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan for breast cancer patients. Each subtype responds differently to available treatment options, and there is variation even within subtype. Any subtype of breast cancer can metastasize. Once the cancer metastasizes beyond the breast, regardless of the subtype, it is considered incurable and fatal.
Breast cancer is complicated and not one single disease - this is why we need we need more research funding specifically aimed at metastatic breast cancer in order to identify the most effective treatments for ALL subtypes and ALL metastatic patients.
100% of every donation funds metastatic breast cancer research. Don’t ignore stage IV.
