ShivShakti Yoga

ShivShakti Yoga Sumona (aka. She continues to perform and teach this traditional Indian dance, in addition to Bollywood Dance) to this day. Bharata Natyam is an artistic yoga.

Sumona Apsara Parii) initiated her love of yoga with her Bharata Natyam (South-Indian Classical Dance) studies, training, and performances, which she started in 1989. It is is one of the oldest dance forms in India--more than 4000 years old. It has various sculpture-like poses and postures that come from yoga; ntricate footwork, meaningful hand gestures and facial expressions, especially the eyes.

All this conveys the myriads of characters revealed by the dancer, from many Indian mythological stories. Hence, yoga has been a part of Sumona's life since her childhood to a large extend. In March 2010, she received her official 200-Hour Yoga Teaching Certificate from Cloud Nine Yoga in Huntington Beach, California. She has several years of in-depth experience teaching Bollywood Dance Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Vinyasa Flow Yoga at Cloud Nine Yoga in Huntington Beach, California, at Shaktibox in Los Angeles, California. at the Gurukul in Norwalk, California, as well at Buddha B Yoga in Washington, DC. At ShivShakti Yoga , Sumona incorpates her passion of Indian dance, meditation, pranayama (deep breath-work), mudras (hand gestures) into her yoga asana (postures) teachings. She uses all kinds of international music during her classes, including soft yoga, Indian classical and/or semi-classical, Bollywood and chakra (energy centers in the human body) sound music. She gives personal attention to each student, and teaches with great love, passion, patience, compassion. as well sincerity in a loving, serene, as well safe environment.

This is one of my very favorite pictures of pyare Papa, which was taken many, many years ago, in which he is so endearingly, and lovingly hugging my little sister’s, Lisa’s, childhood Teddy Bear (she still has this precious stuffed animal with her).

This picture makes me cry (of joy), because it reveals Papa’s sweet and childlike and endearing qualities so deeply and poignantly and beautifully. 🥰🥰🥰

I am so grateful to my/our beloved MaPa (Parents) for teaching my sister and me how to genuinely respect and honor all faiths and religions and spiritual wisdoms.

This is a humble, devotional Spiritual Healing Table of mine/ours, if you will, encompassing of a beautiful statue of a Good Guardian Angel, Lord Buddha, Buddhist Saint, on an Elephant, Devi MahaLakshmi, Hindu Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity, and a sacred symbol of 🕉 in blue.

True Story Time:

Growing up, my family and I went through quite a bit of racism when we lived in Germany.

Both my sister and I had to listen to some pretty unsettling things about our skin color, our culture, our traditions.

Though, there is one empowering experience I remember very vividly:

I was around 9 years old in German school, minding my own business and heading my
way to class in the school hallway.

This German white girl just popped up in front of me out of nowhere and nastily asked:

“Warum bist Du so dunkel?”

(Why are you so dark?)

I fearlessly looked at this girl right in the eye and asked her:

“Warum gehst Du zum See und willst dunkel sein wie mir?“

(Why do you go to the beach and want to get a tan, trying to be my skin color?)

This girl’s jaws dropped and she was completely dumbfounded. She had no answer to my question.

I smiled and gave a smug look, then breezily walked my way to class.

Ordinarily, I probably would have been afraid to say anything, as this girl was much bigger than me (even, then, I was very small and petite, as the rest of the girls and women in my family), but for some reason, I was fearless at that moment.

I had this beautiful blessing and protection of Devi Durga Maa (Hindu Goddess of Protection and Strength), which, even, then I could feel within and all around me.

What is beautiful is this ignorant, white girl never bothered me ever again.

Guessing she felt, well, kinda dumb.
