Four days out. This is the part of a moon cycle that nobody photographs and it is the part that does the work.

The new moon lands Saturday morning and it lands in Libra.

I said last week that Libra is the sign of everyone else — partnership, balance, the constant quiet arithmetic of what other people need. A new moon in that sign is not a general-purpose fresh start. It is specific. It asks a question about the arithmetic.

And the question is not the one people expect. It is not what do I want.

It is: what have I agreed to that I never actually agreed to?

Those are different things and the second one is harder. Most of what fills a life was never decided. It accumulated. Somebody assumed and you did not correct it and four years later it is simply how things are. Nobody was at fault. Nothing was negotiated. It just set, the way concrete sets.

A Libra new moon is a good moment to find one of those and look straight at it. One. Not the whole inventory — the whole inventory is how people end up doing nothing.

So here is what I would actually do with the four days.

Today, notice. Just notice. Do not decide.

Tomorrow, name it out loud or write it down. There is a real difference between a thing you have been carrying and a thing you have said. The sentence is the work.

Thursday, sit with what it would cost to change it. Honestly. Some things cost more than they are worth and that is a legitimate answer.

Friday, decide what the first small move is. Not the whole resolution. The first move.

Then Saturday you are not starting from nothing, which is the thing that makes new moon intentions fall over. Most people arrive at the moment with a blank page and expect the sky to fill it.

Mama Moon is what I drink through that stretch. Traditionally used to support a woman through the turning of her own month.

And the stones of this season are gathered in the TBE Herbs Libra Kit if you would rather not assemble them.

Four days. Start with noticing.

There is a category of plant that nobody markets well, because what it does is not dramatic enough to photograph.

Oatstraw is the clearest example I know.

Oatstraw. Same species as the oats in your cupboard and not the same part. The grain is the seed. Oatstraw is the green stalk and the unripe head, cut while the plant is still growing and the timing is the whole craft of it.

It is harvested at what growers call the milky stage — the point where if you press the immature seed head between your fingers, a white liquid comes out. That window is roughly a week. Before it, the plant has not built what you want. After it, the milk hardens into grain and the stalk becomes hay. Hay is not medicine. It is bedding.

So when you buy oatstraw, what you are really buying is somebody's attention to a seven-day window in a field. I think that is worth saying out loud, because it is invisible in the jar.

What it is traditionally used for is where the marketing falls down. Oatstraw is not for a bad night. It is for a frayed month. It belongs to the category herbalists call nourishing — plants you take steadily, over weeks, that do not announce themselves on day one and that people notice mostly in hindsight, when something that used to fray no longer does.

It is mineral-dense, which is why it is one of the three I named for the overnight jar. It is mild. It is faintly sweet. Nobody has ever had to be talked into the taste.

The household medicine that traveled with people into Appalachia and the American South used it exactly this way. So did Ayurvedic practice with related preparations and so did European folk practice — the plant you kept on hand not for a crisis but for a season.

Smart Head is the TBE Herbs blend for the long stretch where the work is still in front of you. It is traditionally used to support a calm mind with sharper focus and attention. People describe a clear lift of energy as its herbs support circulation and oxygen to the brain. Calm and alert at the same time.

If this month took something out of you, this is the shape of plant that answers. Not fast. Just steadily and then one day you notice.

The Moon comes full tomorrow morning at 9:49, and it comes full in Aries while the Sun sits opposite in Libra. I want to talk about that axis, because it is the most honest one in the whole wheel.

Libra is the sign of everyone else. Partnership, balance, the constant quiet arithmetic of what other people need. It governs the kidneys and the lower back and the skin. Think about what those three have in common — they are all boundary and filtration. What comes in, what goes out, what you hold onto and what you let pass through. The organs of deciding what is actually yours to carry.

Aries is the opposite pole. It is the sign of the one who has to live your life. First person, before it gets negotiated with anybody.

A full moon on that axis does something specific. The Sun is in Libra, so the season's work is other people. Then the Moon comes full in Aries and the part of you that is not up for negotiation gets lit from all the way across the sky. It does not ask politely. It asks which of the two you have been feeding.

I know what that looks like in a real life. You attend to every single thing that is asking for you. The orders, the household, the call you owe somebody, the work with your name on it. And the one thing nobody is asking for is the thing only you can give yourself. That is not a character flaw. That is Libra season with the Aries Moon still on its way.

Now the moon itself, which I love for a reason that has nothing to do with astrology.

This is the Harvest Moon, the full moon nearest the equinox. Most months the moon comes up about fifty minutes later each night. But near the equinox the angle of its path flattens against the horizon, so it rises only twenty or thirty minutes later, several nights in a row. Before electric light that was not a curiosity. It was the difference between finishing and not finishing. The harvest could go on after sundown because the sky kept handing the light back.

That is the whole meaning of the thing. More time, at the exact point in the year it was needed. Whatever you have not gotten to — the moon is not asking you to explain it. It is holding the lamp up a little longer.

For the Libra region, Burdock Root is where I would start. Arctium lappa. It sends a taproot down as far as three feet, which is most of the reason it matters — a plant reaching that deep is pulling minerals the shallow-rooted ones never touch, then storing all of it through the winter. That is also why it is dug in autumn, which is right now. Traditionally used to support the body's own cleansing.

And if you have ever pulled a burr off a dog's coat you have already handled this plant. A Swiss engineer in the 1940s did exactly that, put the hooks under a microscope and came away with the idea for Velcro. The plant was teaching grip long before anybody was listening.

Go out and look at it tonight. It will already read full.

Today the day and the night come out even, and by tomorrow the dark has the longer half. That is the equinox. It is also the last day of Virgo season, so before it closes I want to answer a question I get asked in a slightly suspicious tone, which I understand.

I say a sign governs a region of the body. People want to know where I got that from.

It is called melothesia and it is older than most people assume. The scheme was formalized in Babylon, where the sky was watched and written down for centuries with a rigor we are still working from. It was assembled with Egyptian material in Alexandria, an African city that was the intellectual center of the ancient Mediterranean world, and it moved from there into Greek, then Arabic, then European medicine. For something like fifteen hundred years no physician working in that lineage would have considered a body without also considering the sky.

I am not telling you this so you will hand your health to a chart. I am telling you because the map is a memory device and a very good one. It orders the body from head to foot in the same sequence as the signs, which is why Aries takes the head and Pisces takes the feet and everything else falls in between in an order a person can actually hold in their mind.

Virgo takes digestion. The intestines, the assimilation, the whole quiet business of sorting what nourishes from what does not. Which is a fitting thing for the season we have just spent together, because that is what this month asks of a person in every other part of life too.

Clean Slate is what I make for that region. Traditionally used to support the digestive tract, taken as a stretch of work rather than a daily habit.

Tomorrow the map turns the page. Libra takes the lower back and the kidneys, the body's own balancing organs, which is either a coincidence or evidence that the people who built this were paying very close attention.

Thank you for spending this season with me.

Two days left in Virgo season. Tomorrow evening the light tips at the equinox and Libra opens on Wednesday.

So I want to leave you with the preparation that changed my own practice more than any other and it is the one nobody makes because it asks you for time instead of money.

The overnight infusion.

A cup of tea is ten minutes. What that ten minutes gets you is the aromatics — the volatile oils, the flavor, the part that hits your nose. That is a real preparation and I make it every day. But there is a whole category of what is in a plant that a ten minute steep does not touch at all and that is the mineral fraction. Minerals are locked in the structure of the leaf and they need hours of contact with water to come out.

So here is the method.

Take a quart jar. Put in a full ounce of dried herb by weight, which will look like far too much — it is roughly a loose handful and a half and it will fill a good third of the jar. Fill it to the top with boiling water. Lid on. Leave it on the counter overnight, four to eight hours. Strain it in the morning and drink it through the day, cold or gently rewarmed. It keeps about two days in the fridge.

It will not taste like tea. It is much deeper and much greener and the first one is a surprise. That is what a genuine mineral extraction tastes like.

Not every plant is suited to it. This method belongs to the mineral-rich leaves and three in particular.

Nettle Leaf is the classic and it is the one I would start you on. Dense, dark, deeply mineral and the long infusion is how nettle has traditionally been taken rather than as a quick cup.

Oatstraw is the gentle one. Softer, slightly sweet and it is the one people reach for when the whole system feels frayed rather than any single part of it.

Red Clover Blossoms make the prettiest infusion of the three and traditionally sit in the blood-cleansing category alongside burdock.

One ounce. One quart. Overnight. That is the whole technique and it is the difference between drinking a plant and actually extracting it.

Thank you for a good month. Libra on Wednesday.

The autumn equinox lands Tuesday evening at 5:05. Virgo season runs through Tuesday and Libra season opens on Wednesday. And I want to use the turn to say something I think about often.

Your year does not turn where you think it does and for most of the world it never did.

The equinox is a real astronomical event. The Sun crosses the celestial equator, day and night come as near to equal as they get and it happens whether or not anybody is watching. But January the first is not an event. Nothing occurs in the sky on that date. It is an administrative decision that most of us inherited without being asked.

Look at how recently even that was agreed. The Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582 and adoption took centuries. Britain and its colonies did not move until 1752 and had to delete eleven days to do it, which caused genuine unrest. Russia did not change until 1918. Greece held out until 1923. This is not ancient. Some of our great-grandparents were alive for it.

And enormous numbers of people have never run their lives by it at all.

The Islamic Hijri calendar is purely lunar. Twelve lunar months, about three hundred and fifty four days so it moves against the seasons by roughly eleven days a year. Ramadan travels through the entire solar year over about thirty three years. A person can fast in high summer as a young woman and in deep winter as an elder.

The Hebrew and Chinese calendars are lunisolar. They follow the Moon but insert an extra month periodically so the seasons do not drift, which is why the Lunar New Year moves between late January and late February.

And this is the one I want you to sit with. The Ethiopian calendar has thirteen months. Twelve of thirty days and a short thirteenth and it runs seven to eight years behind the one on your phone. It is not a curiosity. It is in daily use right now. Its structure — twelve thirty-day months plus a handful of days added at the end — is directly descended from the ancient Egyptian civil calendar, which had exactly that shape and called those extra days the five upon the year. The Coptic calendar in Egypt keeps the same structure. That Kemetic architecture never died. It has simply been running, in Africa, continuously, while the rest of us adopted something newer and assumed it was the default.

The Egyptians also began their year with a star rather than a date. When Sirius rose just before dawn after being invisible for weeks, that was the new year and it arrived alongside the flood. Their three seasons were named for water. Akhet for the inundation, Peret for the emergence, Shemu for the harvest.

And a calendar can be smaller than a year. The traditional Yoruba week is four days rather than seven, each with its own character. In Akan practice in Ghana a child is named for the day of the week they were born, which is why there are men called Kwame and women called Akosua all over the world — a person's name carrying the day the sky handed them.

So when I say the equinox is a turning point I am naming one system among many and Libra begins here only in the tropical zodiac that anchors itself to this exact moment. The sidereal zodiac used across Vedic astrology anchors to the fixed stars instead and because the Earth wobbles slowly the two have drifted about twenty four degrees apart. Which means most people reading this are one sign in Western astrology and the sign before it in Vedic. You are not one thing. You were never one thing.

Libra governs the kidneys, the lower back and the skin and Blood Fortifier and Cleanser and Burdock Root are both traditionally used to support that filtering work. Burdock in particular has been used for the skin from the inside across Traditional Chinese Medicine, European folk practice and Japanese cooking, where it is eaten as a vegetable called gobo.

Which calendar did your people keep? Tell me. I would genuinely love to know.

I want to spend a Saturday on what I reach for before I reach for a bottle, because that order matters and I would be a poor teacher if I only talked about the things I make.

A steam. Water brought to a boil and taken off the heat, a towel over your head, your face over the bowl, ten minutes with your eyes closed. Warm moist air is the oldest respiratory support there is and it turns up in every tradition I have studied, because every tradition had a pot. Add a few mullein leaves or a little thyme from your own spice rack if you want to. Plain water does the work.

A broth. Not a recipe. A practice. Something simmered long and slow with an onion and garlic and whatever roots are in the drawer. Every culture I know of has one of these and reaches for it at the same moment. That is not coincidence. Warm, salted, hydrating and easy on a body that does not want to work hard. It is universal because it is right.

Warm water first thing in the morning, before coffee. Not because coffee is a villain but because you wake dehydrated and asking a tired system for output before you have given it any input is a hard way to start a day.

And sleep, which I said last Sunday and will keep saying. It is the largest lever any of us has.

Here is why I put these first. Somebody who has a bottle for every problem is not teaching you anything. They are building a dependency. I would rather listen to what a body is actually asking for, tell you what I know and then offer you a clean plant for the part where a plant genuinely helps.

Sometimes a steam is the answer. Sometimes the season turns and you want more behind you and that is what Breath of Life is for. Cooties Be Gone is the short, targeted one for the day something is clearly coming on. Immune Enhancement is the steady daily work underneath both.

Practice and plant. In that order.

What do you already do when you feel something coming? I want to hear it. Some of you were taught things I have never heard and I collect them.

Equal day, equal night — and then the Earth tips toward Fall.

Here's what's actually happening this week. The Earth's tilt lines up so that the sun sits directly over the equator, and for one turn of the planet the day and the night are the same length. Everybody on Earth gets the same deal at the same time. Then the light starts shortening, and we move into Fall together.

The plants read it before we do. As daylight shortens, a plant stops pushing energy up into leaf and flower and pulls it down into the root to store it. That's why root harvest season is right now, and why plant workers across West Africa, Appalachia, India and the Caribbean all landed on the same fall rhythm independently — because the plant told them. Burdock root, dug in autumn. Ashwagandha, dug in autumn. Dandelion root, at its strongest now. Traditionally used to support digestion, steady energy, and the body's own cleansing as the seasons turn.

And I'll say the other part out loud, because this year has been long for a lot of us: the equinox is the one day the sky refuses to rank your good year against your hard one. Equal hours. Equal weight. The promotion and the breakdown, the thing you built and the thing that fell over — all of it went into making the person reading this. You don't have to enjoy the heavy half. You're just allowed to notice it got you here.

So we're throwing an Equinox Sale, and I'll tell you plainly why. Not for a quarter. For this family — the 250+ of you who left a review, the women who call to tell me they're back to themselves, the ones who've been ordering since the beginning. And for everybody else out here doing their best on a tilted planet.

15% off herbs · 50% off crystals with a purchase of $25 or more
Saturday, September 19 – Thursday, September 24 · In-store and online

One more thing: the equinox falls on my birthday this year. Which means I get balance, cake, and an excuse — all in the same 24 hours.

I want to talk about sea plants today and I want to say something first that people do not expect to hear from someone who sells them.

The same plant does not do the same thing for every person.

I have watched this for twenty five years. Two women take the same sea moss. One says her hair came back. One says her joints eased. One says nothing much and then six weeks later she mentions offhand that she has not been tired in the afternoons. Same jar. Same preparation. Three different bodies arriving with three different needs and the plant meeting each of them where they actually stood.

This is what nutrient dense really means and it is more interesting than a list. A plant that carries a wide spectrum of nourishment does not decide in advance what it is for. Your body decides. Where you are depleted is where you will notice it first and that is why one person's experience of a plant is a poor prediction of yours.

There is a second layer to this and I will name it plainly because it is how I actually work.

Plants respond to the person handling them. Your relationship with a plant, what you bring to it, what you have been given to work with — these are not decoration on top of the chemistry. They are part of it. A plant may do something in my hands that it will not do in someone else's and there are practitioners whose hands do things mine do not. That is not a competition. That is the spiritual nature of this work and it is why two people can follow the same recipe and get two different medicines.

It is also why I can put together a formula using something that is not on anybody's trend list, from a direction nobody is looking and it works. I am not assembling ingredients off a chart. I am listening and then I am blending.

Now the sea plants themselves.

Irish sea moss is Chondrus crispus and that is the only species I work with and the only one I sell. That matters more than people realize. Several things get sold under the name sea moss and they are not the same organism. I use one, I know it and I have the testing to stand behind what is in it.

Bladderwrack is Fucus vesiculosus, a brown seaweed named for the little air bladders along its fronds that lift it upright when the tide comes in.

Sea vegetables in general are extraordinary and underused in this country. They grow in mineral-rich water and they take that richness into themselves and coastal peoples everywhere — Ireland, Jamaica, West Africa, Japan, the Pacific — worked that out independently and built it into ordinary food. Not a supplement. Dinner.

Traditionally used to support daily nourishment and mineral intake. Where it lands in you is between you and the plant.

One caution I will always give. Bladderwrack is naturally high in iodine. If you have a thyroid condition, take thyroid medication, are pregnant or nursing or know you are sensitive to iodine, talk to a qualified practitioner before you start.

Take it with a meal. And then pay attention to what it does in you rather than what it did for somebody on the internet.
