May is Water Safety Awareness Month.

Did you know: Black children are 3x more likely to drown than their white counterparts? This means that Black children make up nearly 20-23% of all fatal child drownings.

The 5 major reasons include:

1. Historically, Black people were not allowed to go to public pools,
2. Misguided cultural thoughts that swimming isn't a Black hobby,
3. Inherited fear of drowning due to slavery,
4. Disinterest in swimming due to their parents not knowing how to swim, and
5. The reluctance to getting straightened hair wet.

It is a great time to have conversations with your children about water safety in preparation of Summer. During summer months, swimming lessons are available through the local Park & Recreations Department for a small fee.

As Mental Health Awareness Month wraps up, the Solano County Black Infant Health Program wants to remind families that emotional wellness starts early, and every child deserves to feel seen, safe, supported, and loved.

Big feelings in little people are real. Helping children identify emotions, build healthy coping skills, and feel connected to trusted adults creates a strong foundation for lifelong mental and emotional well-being.

Solano County Black Infant Health Program's will be hosting the 18th Cohort of Mocha Momma Thrives (MMT) Group, which is a culturally affirming, 8-week virtual sisterhood group, which will helps develop and redefine participants’ thoughts about healthy, nurturing mothering from a culturally specific perspective.

Participants will have robust conversation about important topics such as intergenerational trauma and struggles, nurturing, attachment, communication, village support, resilience, self-care, etc., as well as culturally specific barriers of healthy parenting. More importantly, we discuss protective factors and resiliency tools to support intentional, healthy parenting choices.

This group will take place virtually each Wednesday midday, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, from Thursday, April 30, 2026 - June 18, 2026. The last session date to join this cohort is Thursday, May 7, 2026. Our Graduation Celebration will be in-person on Thursday, June 25, 2026; Location/Time: TBD.

This group is for any Black/African American identifying pregnant, parenting, bonus-parenting, or caretaker, female identifying person, ages 16 years old and over, living in Solano County.

In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17), the first joint Community Advisory Board (CAB) “Turn The Curve” (TTC) meeting is happening on Wednesday, April 15th from 2:30pm-4:00pm via Zoom (virtual). brings awareness of how race-based inequities shape birth outcomes for Black birthing people. Career Readiness Workshops Hosted by Living in the Black Foundation, International Living in the Black Foundation, International is offering two FREE workshops for young adults ages 18 to 30.

• Get Ready To Get Hired will take place on Tuesday April 7th from 6-8pm at TRIBE Event Space (3272 Sonoma Blvd., #3, Vallejo, CA 94590).
• Keep the Job and Grow will take place on Saturday, May 2nd from 10a-12noon at the Fairfield Cordelia Library (5050 Business Center Dr., Fairfield, CA 94534). To register, utilize the QR Code.
