Let’s talk dysgraphia. Since today is National Dysgraphia day ✍️, let’s talk about what it is.
Dysgraphia refers to the motor ability to write well and legibly but it’s not just that simple. This takes many other components of literacy to actually be able to take all the pieces of sounds, spelling, structure, syntax, meaning and grammar followed by forming letters on the lines with proper case, good sizing, and spacing. Sound like a lot- well it is and it’s so more complex than most realize. However, it can be addressed. Keyboarding is not the answer, and there is plenty of research that shows massive connections between literacy and writing.If your child struggles with this more writing practice is not the answer.

It’s time to change the conversation from what is wrong with a child struggling to read to what is wrong in the environment that would actively harm a child who is showing multiple signs that the methods being used are not working.
