🌟🌟🌟🌟 Charles Success Story 🌟🌟🌟🌟
A deeply rewarding success story in the SNF/LTC setting involved a resident admitted following a stroke who presented with expressive aphasia, as well as a voice and resonance disorder, and significant dysphagia. Upon admission, he was placed on a Dysphagia Advanced diet with honey-thickened liquids due to swallowing safety concerns. Through our facility's incredible FEES program, Jordyn our Speech Therapist used an instrumental assessment to guide an individualized, evidence-based plan of care tailored to his goals.

Using restorative swallowing exercises focused on improving pharyngeal strength and coordination, we worked consistently to rebuild skills impacted by his stroke. Following a repeat FEES assessment, he demonstrated such meaningful improvement that we were able to safely upgrade him to a regular diet with thin liquids — a milestone that greatly improved both his intake amount and quality of life.

Because he is such a social person, improving his voice was also an important therapy goal. Through the use of evidence-based diaphragmatic breathing techniques, vocal strengthening exercises, and resonance training, we improved his vocal loudness, pitch, and overall communication effectiveness. Over time, his confidence grew alongside his voice, allowing him to reconnect more naturally with staff, peers, and loved ones.

One of the most meaningful moments of this journey was hearing him express gratitude and contentment with the progress he achieved through his hard work and dedication to the plan of care we had created together for him in Speech Therapy. Watching him regain not only function, but also confidence and connection, was a powerful reminder of the impact that compassionate and patient-centered therapy can have on patient outcomes.
