Labeling foods as "good","bad", "junk", "clean" etc. assigns a moral value to food and this value can be internalized which leads to guilt and shame after eating foods labeled as "bad." Food does not have moral value and all food provides our bodies with nourishment!

What leads to the development of an eating disorder is complex and the path to recovery can vary greatly from person to person. It is natural to compare your recovery to someone else's and it is helpful to remember to focus on celebrating how far you have come so far in your own process.

The serving size on a nutrition label is determined by the food manufacturer and does not necessarily reflect a "normal" portion. It definitely does not take into account your specific nutrition needs or what else you have eaten that day. Bottom line, using the serving size to determine how much to eat is a way to focus on numbers and restriction vs. listening to your body's internal cues.

It is officially summer! You are not alone if you are noticing an increased pressure to attempt to change your body. Here is your reminder that you can enjoy this season without changing your body. Try focusing on how summer activities makes you feel vs. what your body looks like doing them. Inability to be present and enjoy travels and plans with family and friends due to a preoccupation with food and body image may be a sign that you are struggling with your relationship with food.

Eating disorders do not "look" a certain way and your weight or BMI do not determine how much you may be struggling with food. It is common for people with eating disorders to feel undeserving of care or feel they have to wait until things get worse to reach out for help. Mealtimes during eating disorder recovery can be overwhelming. I will be holding a lunch time meal support group this summer. The purpose of this group is to provide a space for connection and community during a meal. The summer months can be a particularly difficult time due to shifting schedules and increase in diet culture talk on social media or among peers.
The group will be facilitated by a Registered Dietitian who will guide the group discussion. Specific nutrition recommendations will not be provided. Email [email protected] to register or get more information.
