Riding Together: HERO

Our executive director, Karina, got the chance to connect with the team at HERO Fargo this week. 💙

We both serve the same community and share the same goal - making sure people aren't held back by barriers to care. HERO helps provide access to affordable medical equipment, and Handi-Wheels helps ensure people can get to essential medical appointments safely and affordably.

She left inspired by the impact their team is making every day and grateful to have organizations like HERO working alongside us to support our community.

A new door is opening at Handi‑Wheels!

Looks like even the local wildlife trusts reliable transportation-our van made a cameo during this unexpected visit at the Northport Fargo branch! Bell Bank
At Handi-Wheels we're used to helping people get where they need to go...but this might be our most unique "neighbor" yet!

We had a unique visitor to our Northport Fargo branch this morning! We can’t be pawsitive, but we think they’d heard Bell does more than just the bear minimum.

The impact of reliable transportation!

In 2025, Handi‑Wheels provided 2,276 rides for our community.
Of those, 2,240 trips supported medical appointments, helping 1,735 older adults and people living with disabilities get where they needed to go.

For many riders, these trips make it possible to maintain their health, independence, and peace of mind. From routine checkups to ongoing treatment, reliable transportation helps people stay connected to care—and to their community.
We’re grateful to our drivers, partners, and supporters who make these journeys possible every day.

In 1975, our community saw a need — and responded in an extraordinary way.

Members of the Red River Valley Handicaps Club and residents of New Horizons Manor collected over 1.7 MILLION BETTY CROCKER COUPONS to purchase the first wheelchair-accessible van in our area. Before that, individuals using wheelchairs had only one transportation option: an ambulance.
From that determination, Handi-Wheels Transportation was born — the first paratransit service in our community.

Today, we continue that legacy by providing safe, reliable, door-to-door transportation for individuals who are disabled, elderly, or living with limited income.

Because transportation isn’t just a ride.
It’s independence. It’s dignity. It’s access to life.
It all started with a community that cared and we are proud to carry that legacy forward every single day!
