June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, a time to learn the signs of abuse, neglect, and exploitation and help protect older adults in our communities.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including financial exploitation, neglect, emotional abuse, and physical abuse. By staying informed, speaking up when something doesn't seem right, and helping older adults stay connected to support systems, we can all play a role in prevention.

AgeWays is proud to work alongside our Prevention of Elder Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation (PEANE) partners:

• Livingston County Catholic Charities – https://www.livingstoncc.org/
▸ Hosting the Stomping Out Elder Abuse 5K Run/Walk

• Neighborhood Legal Services – https://nlsmichigan.org/
▸ Home of the Elder Law & Advocacy Center

• Catholic Charities Washtenaw County – https://ccwcwashtenaw.org/
▸ Offering elder abuse trainings and educational resources

• Lakeshore Legal Aid – https://lakeshorelegalaid.org/
▸ Hosting Senior Summit events in Oakland and Macomb counties

• Disability Network Eastern Michigan – https://www.dnemichigan.org/

Together, we can help create safer communities where older adults are treated with dignity, respect, and care.

Learning someone you love has dementia can feel overwhelming. There’s often a lot of information coming at once, and it’s okay to slow down. You don’t have to do everything right away.

A few early steps to consider:
• Take time to process your feelings
• Learn more about the diagnosis
• Ask the healthcare team questions
• Talk with family and friends about support
There’s no rush. These steps can happen over time.

As we close out Medicare Fraud Prevention Week, remember: one of the most effective ways to stop Medicare fraud is to prevent it before it happens.

But for the situations you can’t prevent, learning how to detect potential fraud, errors, and abuse is just as important. Reviewing your Medicare statements and protecting your Medicare number can help you catch suspicious activity early.

If you notice something concerning on a Medicare statement or accidentally share your Medicare information, report it. Don’t ignore it and don’t feel embarrassed — scammers are skilled at what they do, and help is available. The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is here to support you.
