UPMC Horizon Family Medicine Residency Program The official UPMC Horizon Family Medicine Residency Page. This page is run by residents.

The mission of the program is to train residents in a small-town and rural environment to become exceptional Family Physicians and to meet the needs of the communities of Mercer and Lawrence Counties while customizing the residency experience for each resident to meet their respective career goals. We provide quality, patient-centered care across all ages and in any clinical setting. Our program features direct, one-on-one interaction with specialists as well as a strong team of experienced, passionate family medicine faculty. Our graduates serve rural to urban communities in Western Pennsylvania and throughout the United States in fields ranging from traditional primary care, all outpatient, hospitalist, ER, and urgent care. Patient care and resident education are equal partners in the mission of the residency.

✨ Innovation Day 2026! 🩺🔎

Last week, our program had the opportunity to take part in Annual Innovation Day, bringing together high school and nursing students for a day of learning, exploration, and hands on experiences.

This year was extra special as we introduced Pat to the community for his very first social appearance! 🤖🩻 Using a virtual reality ultrasound simulator, students got a chance to experience what it’s like to use ultrasound in an interactive way.

Thank you Dr.Jim Liszewski and our amazing PGY-1 residents for sharing their time and enthusiasm!

Hi everyone,
I’m Anna! I grew up in India and completed medical school there before moving to the U.S., where I spent two years training in General Surgery. I’m excited to bring those experiences with me into Family Medicine while exploring a different side of medicine and building long-term relationships with my patients. I come from a small, close-knit family of my mom, dad, and my “sister” Lumi (my parents’ cat!) the newest and possibly the most spoiled addition to our family. Outside the hospital, I love learning new dance forms, binge-watching sitcoms like The Big Bang theory and scrolling through far too many cat reels. I enjoy learning new languages, exploring different cultures, spending time with friends, and finding little ways to learn something new wherever I go. I’m looking forward to making this next chapter a memorable one!

What a successful weekend at FMEC in Atlantic City, NJ! 🌊

We loved presenting our work, hosting our Pap Smear Clinical Camp ⚡️, learning about hot topics in primary care, and connecting with fellow programs and colleagues.

It was great meeting all the wonderful applicants! Best of luck!

Family medicine starts with the word “family”. And what else could be a better place to train than an actual family that inspires you, teaches you, loves you, corrects you and actually helps you become a version of yourself you could otherwise not become.
Those are the exact feelings I got when I interviewed at UPMC Horizon
For me, it is an honour to be part of this family !

Time is truly a currency. I use time outside medicine to play chess, sometimes read books or occasionally write.

I believe that complexity is just the most extreme form of simplicity and
I am just a simple man who wants to learn !

Meet our interns 👋 First up, we have Dr. Khanzada: Hi everyone! I am originally from Minneapolis, MN and attended Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school. I was drawn to family medicine because I truly enjoy building long term relationships with patients based on trust and the emphasis on preventative medicine. UPMC Horizon stood out to me because of the close knit community I experienced during my interview and second look, as well as strong clinical training opportunities. Outside of medicine I enjoy traveling with my husband, cooking, trying out new coffee shops, and spending time with my family and friends. I am excited to join the team and serve the community over the next few years!

As part of our community involvement, our residents and faculty volunteer at a local Free Clinic (Joshua's Havens) each Tuesday providing care to individuals who may otherwise have difficulty accessing health care.
But we know that there are still unmet needs, particularly for women and children experiencing housing insecurity in Mercer County and the surrounding communities.
We’re proud to support the development of a new Women’s Health Center to help meet these needs. With support from the Buhl Regional Health Foundation, this vision is becoming a reality.
