Eeeeek! But worth doing as much as you can…
We are being poisoned.
It's not just the food. It's not just the air. It's not just the water.
Our clothing is one of the biggest culprits — and most people have no idea. This week all eyes are on Lululemon, as they are reporting how truly toxic their products are. But the part they're leaving out? This is the reality for a majority of the clothing being sold today.
In an effort to cut costs, brands have moved away from clean materials like cotton, linen, and silk and have transitioned to synthetics treated with PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals." These man-made compounds are used to make clothing water-resistant, stain-proof, and wrinkle-free, but the cost to your health is staggering.
A recent study detected PFAS in approximately 88% of tested textile samples. Research has shown that PFAS can transfer from textiles to the skin through direct contact, sweat, and friction, and may be absorbed into the body. According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey, more than 95% of Americans already have PFAS in their blood and tissue.
So what do these chemicals do to us? They have been linked to increased risk of prostate, kidney, and testicular cancers. A USC study estimated that PFAS in drinking water alone contributes to more than 6,800 cancer cases per year in the United States and that doesn't even account for exposure through the clothing on your back.
Your clothing should be a conscious choice. When you remove the toxic garments from your closet and choose brands that use clean materials, you are taking a real step towards protecting your health and the health of your family.
