๐ฟ Friday Family and Friend Day: Walk Ten Miles in Someone Elseโs Shoes ๐ฟ
Traumatic Brain Injury does not always show on the outside.
A Survivor may struggle to organize thoughts, choose the right words, control tone, or communicate quickly.
Sometimes, what we mean and what another person hears are entirely different.
When that misunderstanding becomes gossip, public accusations, ridicule, or rejection, it can create deep emotional and mental torment.
I know this personally.
Since returning to North Carolina, I have experienced painful misunderstandings that I carried silently in my heart.
They caused me to ask:
Who stands up for Brain Injury Survivors when our words are interpreted as something we never intended?
How do we defend ourselves without being labeled difficultโor even a bully?
In its common modern meaning, bullying is not simply a disagreement, an uncomfortable conversation, or one misunderstood statement.
Bullying generally involves a pattern of deliberately intimidating, humiliating, controlling, or harming another personโoften someone perceived as more vulnerable.
Before assigning that label, we should slow down, seek context, and listen to everyone involved.
Scripture teaches us:
โEveryone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.โ โ James 1:19
Social media should never become a courtroom where one personโs version is treated as the complete truth.
Public accusations can deeply wound a Survivor, an older adult, a disabled personโor anyone whose voice has not yet been heard.
A compassionate person seeks understanding before judgment.
Jesus gave us a better way:
โIf your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you.โ โ Matthew 18:15
Wisdom and courage are demonstrated when we address conflict privately, honestly, and respectfullyโnot when we gather an online audience, seek sympathy, or damage another personโs reputation.
As Christians, we are not called to prove that we are more important, more powerful, or more righteous than someone else.
We are called to demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit:
โLove, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.โ โ Galatians 5:22โ23
Jesus was misunderstood, falsely accused, mocked, and rejected.
Yet He continued to speak truth, extend mercy, and fulfill His mission.
When I am misunderstood, I remember that my Heavenly Fatherโmy Abbaโknows my heart completely.
โYou have searched me, Lord, and you know me.โ โ Psalm 139:1
That does not mean we must remain silent when mistreated.
We can calmly explain what we meant, establish healthy boundaries, save evidence, when necessary, seek wise counsel, and pursue peaceful resolution.
We can stand up for ourselves without trying to tear someone else down.
To every Brain Injury Survivor who has withdrawn because you were misunderstood, mishandled, or judged without compassion:
You are not alone.
Your disability does not erase your dignity.
A misunderstanding does not define your character, and someone elseโs opinion does not determine your identity.
โThe Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.โ โ Psalm 34:18
I may be disabled, but I choose to claim my abilitiesโnot surrender to my disabilities.
I will continue sharing hope with Survivors who desire freedom, healing, purpose, and a meaningful life after TBI.
Today, let us pause before reacting.
Ask questions before assuming.
Listen before labeling.
Speak privately before posting publicly.
Walk not merely one mile, but ten miles in someone elseโs shoes.
You may discover a story, disability, struggle, or wounded heart you could not see from the outside.
Let us be more like Jesusโhumble, truthful, compassionate, forgiving, and willing to see the worth in every person.
๐ Claim Your Abilities, Not Your Disabilities.
