We are always very transparent at our clinic. We wanted to address a medical malpractice / criminal case that is circulating through social media.
In Texas, an owner of a med spa gave a patient an IV hydration drip and unfortunately the patient passed away.
Here are the details of the story:
The owner of the clinic was not a medical professional in any way. She was not a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, or MD.
She did have "oversight" from an MD but was not overseen very closely.
The owner administered an IV bag that contained something called TPN. TPN is short for total parenteral nutrition. It is given in the hospital. TPN is something our staff is very familiar with, from working in the hospital. TPN is only ever given in urgent situations when a patient cannot take anything by mouth or into the stomach. TPN is only ever administered through a central line, never an IV.
TPN is infused very slowly, usually over 24 hours. This is because it has very high levels of vitamins and minerals including potassium.
Potassium when infused too quickly, can cause cardiac arrythmias and cardiac arrest.
At our clinic, we would NEVER use TPN or potassium.
Our jaws actually dropped when we heard what happened!
Our IV hydration formulas are specially prepared with ingredients that are meant for fast infusion and measured at specific levels.
Most IV hydration clinics do not even check lab work, which is not necessary by law, but we do.
Your safety is always our top priority!
Every IV hydration drip is ordered by a reputable pharmacy, dosed by a nurse practitioner and given by a registered nurse. Our clinic is also overseen by an emergency room physician.
The clinic at fault, did not have any equipment for emergency situations.
At Hometown Health, we have an AED/defibrillator. Cardiac revival medications. Ambu bag, oxygen. The NP and RN are trained in Basic Life Support, Advanced Care Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
