Where Are We Investing Our Time, Money & Energy? And why do we so often put ourselves last?
Let’s have an honest conversation.
Where are you investing your time, money, and energy?
Take a moment and really think about it.
We make time for work.
We make time for appointments.
We make time for our families.
We make time for the gym, the salon, dinner out, shopping, vacations, hobbies, entertainment, and scrolling through our phones.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying those things.
But when it comes to investing in ourselves, something interesting happens.
We say:
"I don't have time right now."
"I can't afford it."
"Maybe when things slow down."
"I'll take care of myself later."
But when does "later" actually come?
The habit of putting ourselves last
Many of us were never taught that taking care of ourselves should be a priority.
We were taught to be productive.
To work hard.
To take care of everyone else.
To push through.
To keep going.
To be strong.
Somewhere along the way, we can start believing that rest has to be earned and that we shouldn't slow down until everything else is taken care of.
But here's the problem:
Everything else is rarely completely taken care of.
There will always be another bill.
Another appointment.
Another responsibility.
Another person who needs something.
Another thing on the to-do list.
And if we continually wait until everything is perfect before we take care of ourselves, we may never get there.
Why is self-care sometimes the first thing we eliminate?
Think about what happens when life gets busy.
What usually gets canceled first?
The thing we scheduled for ourselves.
The quiet morning.
The walk.
The massage.
The meditation.
The time to sit alone.
The wellness appointment.
The Reiki session.
We tell ourselves we'll reschedule.
Then another week passes.
Then another.
And eventually, taking care of ourselves becomes something we only consider when we're completely exhausted.
Why do we wait until we're running on empty?
Perhaps it's because we've become accustomed to measuring value by productivity.
If we're working, we're accomplishing something.
If we're taking care of someone else, we're needed.
If we're checking things off the list, we're being productive.
But sitting quietly?
Resting?
Receiving?
Doing absolutely nothing for a little while?
That can feel almost uncomfortable.
This is where Reiki enters the conversation.
Reiki isn't about fixing you.
You aren't broken.
Reiki can be a space to pause.
A space to breathe.
A space to become still.
A space where you don't have to perform, accomplish, produce, or take care of anyone else for a little while.
You simply get to be.
For some people, that stillness can create an opportunity to become more aware of what they're carrying—physically, mentally, emotionally, or energetically.
And sometimes the most powerful thing we can do isn't add another thing to our schedule.
Sometimes it's creating space to reconnect with ourselves.
What if we started investing in ourselves before we're completely depleted?
We don't wait until our car is completely broken down before we maintain it.
We don't wait until our phone reaches zero percent before we think about charging it.
Yet we often wait until our own internal battery is completely drained before we give ourselves permission to rest.
Maybe self-care doesn't have to be a reward.
Maybe it can simply be maintenance.
Not because something is wrong with you.
But because you're worth caring for.
So here's the question I want to leave with you...
Where are you investing your time, money, and energy?
And perhaps the bigger question:
How much of that investment is coming back to YOU?
Not your job.
Not your family.
Not your responsibilities.
You.
Your peace.
Your rest.
Your emotional well-being.
Your connection with yourself.
Your ability to slow down and breathe.
You don't have to wait until you're completely exhausted to decide that you matter.
You don't have to justify needing a moment.
And you don't have to earn rest.
Sometimes prioritizing yourself is simply saying:
"I matter, too."
🌿 Let's start a conversation.
What is the biggest thing that keeps you from prioritizing yourself?
Is it time?
Money?
Guilt?
Responsibilities?
Feeling like everyone else needs you first?
Or have you simply become so accustomed to putting yourself last that you don't know where to begin?
I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
