In honor of ADHD Awareness Month, let's talk about some common misconceptions of ADHD. These stereotypes can often inhibit someone from pursuing a diagnosis, and can definitely contribute to low self-esteem.
ADHD brains crave dopamine. If something is boring, you'll find yourself doing anything else to follow the dopamine. Doing dishes is dull and repetitive, with too may steps and sensory issues. Of course you'd rather watch your comfort show, play a video game or daydream for hours. Habits and sameness don't generate dopamine, novelty does. So your fancy skincare routine, new planner or shiny laminated chore chart? Of course that works for the first few days or weeks. But when the novelty wears off it's almost impossible to keep up.
If you find yourself or your child struggling with any of these stereotypes or feeling stuck and unable to find a way forward, we're here to help! Our Peer Support Specialists have been there, done that, gotten the t-shirt and now want to help you out of the same rut they were in. We're not perfect, but we've tried a lot and honestly? Sometimes you just need someone to sit next to you and hold your hand through the process.
