Rhythm is a huge part of martial art. Musical and warrior traditions have always been entwined in ways that are both cultural and combative. But it’s the specific understanding of rhythm— particularly broken rhythm— that lends immediate advantage to all aspects of combat. Drills like these are not only fun, they’re an effective way to deepen your understanding of how to feel rhythm internally and intuitively. Less about “fighting,” and more about training intangible attributes, padwork like this is a crowd favorite for sure.

“Rank” in the Martial Arts is always a complicated topic amongst Martial Art teachers, coaches, and school owners. At Boombox, our philosophy is simple: leveling up is an exciting way for our members to track their personal progress, and understand how they are improving as the specific individual they are, rather than as compared to anyone else. This makes rank more personal, more contextual, and we believe, more meaningful.

Boombox is not just a team of teams, it’s a Training Family. While our space is home to several different training groups, we’re all one community of everyday Metro Detroiters who have made the Martial Arts a part of their lifestyle. We are friendly, diverse, and genuinely supportive of one another, making BMBX MMA a rare and special place to train Mixed Martial Arts. Fall classes are starting now, and we’d love to have you check out what makes this place, these skills, and this collection of people feel like a home away from home.

DID YOU KNOW that BOOMBOX MMA is the home of Kalis Ilustrisimo, one of the world’s most sought out blade fighting methods, for the state of Michigan? The Group holds public training sessions in Kalis Ilustrisimo every Thursday evening, developing practical skills, and maintaining the dueling and fighting legacy of Antonio “Tatang” Ilustrisimo for future generations of Metro Detroiters here in Ferndale. BMBX is extremely proud to host this group every week, and honored by the opportunity and responsibility to perpetuate the lessons of Tatang Ilustrisimo, Master Tony Diego, and KIRO Founding Coach Arnold Narzo.
