Fijian-born Shika Raju has become the first woman from the Pacific to make it to the top of Mount Everest 🗻

She made her ascent late last month and joked that coming from the Pacific Islands, she should have been more interested in swimming or playing rugby.

"I'm probably not what people imagine when they think of an Everest climber... I lived in Suva until I was eight years old, so when I came here, mountains were never a thing for us. Coming from an island, I should be swimming or something like that, or playing rugby.

"But then I somehow got into mountaineering. It started off being an endurance athlete, I started doing marathons... and then pursued mountaineering and fell in love with mountaineering."

And with the El Niño events that are expected this year, the timing couldn’t be worse.
“Moorings that stretch west off the coast of Newport, Ore., and Grays Harbor, Wash., captured temperature, acidity, and oxygen content data that is key to predicting climate-related environmental changes as well as the health of the region’s commercial fishing industry. Another station is anchored 620 miles offshore in the central Gulf of Alaska.”

The $368 million network of instruments collecting data in both the Atlantic and Pacific has been critical to climate and ocean research.

Join us for a Special Talk Story with Aunty Eloise: Birth Traditions Passed Down in Our ʻOhana.

Aunty Eloise will share her family’s long tradition of homebirth, where babies were welcomed with prayer, song, and the loving support of aunties and midwives. As we honor International Homebirth Day on June 8th, we celebrate the wisdom of our elders and the right of Pacific Islander mothers to choose a birth space that is safe, culturally grounded, and deeply held.

Our birth. Our stories. Our way.
