When Selena's mom was diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer, she started driving to her house every day before and after work. She never told her colleagues.

She's one of roughly 15% of American adults balancing a job with caring for a family member. Most of their employers have no idea.

Employers track headcount, utilization, and productivity in detail, but almost none can say how many of their people are caregivers right now. At most companies, caregiving stays invisible.

In a new piece, the National Alliance for Caregiving's President and CEO Jason Resendez shares what employers are missing and what they can do about it. Based on our Caregiving in the US 2025 data:

🔵 Over 63 million Americans are family caregivers, and 6 in 10 are employed
🔵 Roughly half of working caregivers face regular disruptions, like arriving late or leaving early
🔵 Nearly 6 in 10 say caregiving has affected their career, from turning down promotions to leaving the workforce

His call to action for employers:

✅ Count caregivers. Use self-identification campaigns, benefits surveys, and ERGs to understand who your caregivers are and what they need.
✅ Make benefits visible and safe. When senior leaders openly share their own caregiving stories, they teach employees what's available and signal that using it isn't a career risk.
✅ Let culture do what policy can't. Train managers to spot strain without requiring disclosure, and make flexibility the default.

Millions of caregivers like Selena are heading into work this morning, carrying care into every call, meeting, and deadline. It's time to design for them.

Is someone more independent because they no longer need support, or because they have access to the right support?

That question, raised at FSSA's September 16 hearing, has stayed with our team.

For many Hoosiers with lifelong disabilities, waiver services aren't a temporary fix. They're the routines, trusted caregivers, supervision, daily prompting and more that make a stable life at home possible. When someone thrives with that support, it can look on paper like they don't need it anymore.

But progress isn't the absence of need. Often, it's evidence that the support is working. At some point, some services become more proactive than reactive – a shift that shouldn’t impact their access to that help.

Family caregivers know this better than anyone. They're the ones doing the redirecting, the reminding, the watching, and the planning that no assessment form fully captures. When that support is removed, families absorb it overnight, often while trying to navigate an appeal at the same time.

That's why we believe assessments should consider a person's full history, including evaluations, service plans, provider records, and caregiver observations, not just a single snapshot.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, we're honoring a view of caregiving we can all learn from. 🍂

In many Indigenous traditions, caring for family isn't treated as a burden to be managed, it's celebrated as a role that gives the caregiver purpose and strengthens the entire community.

First Nations wellness frameworks describe health as a balance of body, mind, emotion, and spirit, grounded in identity, belonging, and connection to family and culture. Caregiving is part of what creates that balance.

It's a meaningful reminder: family caregivers aren't just filling gaps in a system, they're carrying something deeply valuable, for their loved ones and for all of us. Everyone deserves care that respects who they are and where they come from.

Today we honor the Indigenous peoples whose homelands include what is now Indiana, and Indigenous caregivers everywhere.
