West Nile virus (WNV) can be a serious, even fatal, illness caused by a bite from an infected mosquito. It can affect people and animals. WNV is the leading illness spread by mosquitoes. Symptoms usually start 2-6 days after being bitten. About 1 in 5 people have symptoms: fever, headache, rash, vomiting, and body aches.

There are no vaccines to prevent WNV. The only defense is to prevent mosquito bites.
◼ Use EPA-registered insect repellent
◼ Wear long, loose-fitting shirts and pants
◼ Use screens on doors and windows
◼ Drain standing water (tires, pots, pet bowls, birdbaths)
◼ Avoid being outside between dusk and dawn

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in or near standing water. Walk around and drain or empty items that collect water. Learn more about WNV at https://ow.ly/9zlS50ZzUwp
