Removal of rare and massive tumor gives new lease of life to 22-year-old from Eritrea

Abel’s “splenomegaly,” one of the rarest tumors in the literature, measured 38 X 23 cm, the largest ever recorded for an enlarged spleen.

Dr. Saha’s care at the MCM hospital provided Abel with new hope of surviving and growing up in life. He feels an excellent blessing from his treatment through Dr. Saha, enabled by Samaritans Healing Hands. He now looks forward to living a long and productive life.

SHH is led by Sukamal Saha, MD, FACS, FRCS(C). Dr. Saha has been considered a leader in the field of surgical oncology for more than thirty years. He was recognized by Newsweek and U.S. News as one of the top 1% of cancer specialists in the country. His pioneering work in sentinel lymph node mapping for colorectal cancer has been performed in 37 countries and more than 230 scientific papers on the subject have been published in the last 30 years.

2020 has been a year full of challenges and unprecedented complications, yet despite starting this foundation in the middle of global pandemic, Samaritan's Healing Hands has accomplished a lot within four months of operating in Africa. We have begun our treatment operations in Ethiopia but have been able to treat patients from all around the African continent including those from countries like Kenya, Sudan and Somalia. As part our creating a sustainable solution in the ongoing fight against cancer we have been training local medical professionals clinically and have begun our educational and research efforts which are needed to build a comprehensive cancer program that is sustainable and able to expand in the years to come. These efforts have made possible through financial support of donors like you! Which is we ask that you continue your support and encourage others do the same in the fight against cancer in Africa!

A primary goal of SHH is to provide necessary testing for cancer patients to facilitate timely diagnoses. Through the SHH Foundation, a missionary cancer surgeon and others will provide much needed surgical care. Our ultimate vision includes education and training of surgical residents and medical students to take the cancer care beyond the hospital and to other parts of the continent.
