🤧 When Should My Child Stay Home From School?
It’s 6:30 in the morning, your child says they don’t feel good, and now you have to make the call: school or sick day? 🎒🌡️
While every situation is different, there are some signs that your child may be better off resting at home:
🌡️ Fever — A fever can be a sign that your child is fighting an infection. Follow your school’s guidelines for when it’s okay to return.
🤢 Vomiting or diarrhea — Staying home gives your child time to recover and helps reduce the spread of illness to classmates.
😴 Too sick to participate — Even without a fever, a child who is unusually tired, uncomfortable, or unable to participate normally in class may need a day at home.
🤧 Significant respiratory symptoms — Frequent coughing, difficulty managing symptoms, or feeling generally unwell may mean your child needs rest and evaluation.
👁️ Certain contagious illnesses — If you suspect something contagious, such as strep throat or pink eye, check with your child’s healthcare provider and follow school policies about returning.
❤️ When in doubt, look at the whole child. A mild runny nose in an otherwise energetic child can be very different from a child who is miserable, exhausted, or getting worse.
And remember: school and daycare policies can vary, so always check your child’s specific requirements for returning after an illness.
If you’re concerned about your child’s symptoms or aren’t sure what to do, give your pediatrician a call.
Sometimes the best thing for a sick kid—and their classmates—is a day to rest, recover, and feel better. ❤️
