✨What is Rock? 🧐
Imagine you’re sitting on a rocking horse that sits in the center of a moving skateboard.
You feel unsteady because the rocking horse wants to rock while the skateboard is moving. When you lean forward, the rocking horse tips forward and you feel like you’re going to fall forward.
When you lean backward, the rocking horse tips back. The more you lean in one direction, the more unstable it feels and the harder it is for the wheels to keep moving fluidly.
Now imagine you’re sitting on a rectangular box that sits on top of a moving skateboard. You lean forward and the box stays still, you lean back, the box stays still again. The Skateboard keeps moving as normal. It’s stable.
Saddle trees are built to have different shapes to accommodate the contour of a horse’s back:
👑 Curved, like the bottom of the rocking horse
👑 Flat, like the bottom of the rectangular box.
💡 This is called the rock! Rock refers to the front-to-back, longitudinal curvature of the saddle tree bars. Every horse has a unique topline profile.
✅ Some are ruler straight and flat backed common in growing colts, mules, donkeys, mutton withered horses, and ponies.
✅ Others are a deep dramatic dip like some of our geriatric horses, swaybacked horses, and horses built downhill.
⚠️ The saddle tree must match the curvature of your horse’s back to prevent discomfort and imbalance.
⛔️ When it’s mismatched it will be a poor fit manifesting in one of two structural errors:
1. Too Little Rock (Bridging)
If your horse has a distinct curve to their back, but you place a flat saddle tree on them, the saddle will "bridge." Like a plank of wood laid across a ditch, the saddle makes firm contact at the front (shoulders) and the back (loins), leaving a hollow middle. Because your weight cannot be distributed across the center of your horse’s back, your horse will end up with severe, localized pressure points at the front of the bars and the back of the bars of the saddle. Over time, bridging creates muscle atrophy behind the shoulder blades. Your horse’s back will get extremely tight, especially in their lower back. Their middle back will weaken. They will be sore and may start giving out in their back end and tripping in their front end.
2. Too Much Rock (Rocking)
On the other end of the spectrum, placing a highly curved saddle tree on a flat-backed horse creates a "teeter-totter" effect like the rocking horse on the skateboard. You will have all pressure and weight drawn exclusively to the center of the horse’s back, leaving the front and back of the bars “free moving” and they will not help with weight distribution at all. The saddle will move around a lot, and you may feel it pivot back and forth while riding. A horse suffering from a saddle with too much rock will develop atrophy in the middle back, creating a swayback effect. (S)he will develop balance issues and chronic back pain.
How do you know if your current saddle has the right amount of rock? You don't need a degree in biomechanics to check. You can perform a quick test in your horse’s stall or paddock.
🐴 Place the saddle bare, directly on your horse’s back.
🔹Place one hand firmly on the horn or swells and press downward. Watch the cantle (back). Does the back of the saddle lift off the horse's spine?
🔹Switch hands and press firmly down on the cantle. Does the front end of the saddle (swells and horn) pop up into the air?
If yes to 1 or both of these, your saddle has too much rock.
🔹 Slide your hand under the middle of the saddle, palm up. Slide from front of your seat to the back. Is there empty space where the saddle isn't touching the horse at all?
If yes, your saddle doesn’t have enough rock and is bridging.
⚠️ Without the proper rock, you will have an unhappy and sore horse!
