Today is International Kangaroo Care Awareness Day. Today we celebrate the benefits that skin to skin care provides for both mom and baby. For baby, it stabilizes temperature, heart rate, breathing patterns, and provides calm and healing for their developing body systems. For mom, it reduces postpartum stress and anxiety, strengthens the maternal-infant bond, and boosts milk supply. It’s the most relaxing, least invasive, “medical” intervention with more proven benefits than any other drug or medicine we can provide to the mother-infant dyad.
