A major advancement in heart care has officially arrived in Wisconsin. 💙🫀

Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center recently became the first hospital in the state to implant a newly FDA-approved surgical valve designed specifically for the tricuspid valve.

The tricuspid valve is one of the heart's four valves and helps keep blood flowing in the right direction through the heart. When it doesn't function properly, it can lead to debilitating symptoms such as fatigue, swelling and shortness of breath, significantly affecting a person's quality of life.

Until now, surgeons commonly relied on replacement valves originally developed for another part of the heart when treating tricuspid valve disease. While effective, this new technology is the first ever surgical valve engineered for the tricuspid position, providing a treatment designed to match the valve's unique anatomy and function.

The procedure was led by Aurora St. Luke's Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. William Fischer III. As one of the region's most experienced heart programs, performing more than 1,500 open-heart surgeries each year, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center continues a long tradition of bringing leading-edge cardiovascular care to our patients and communities.

We are excited to announce that Christopher Soska, MBA, has been named senior vice president and president of Aurora Health Care's Northern Wisconsin Area, effective August 17th.

Chris joins us with decades of experience leading rural health systems and advancing access to care. Most recently, he served as president of Marshfield Clinic Health System's East Market, overseeing three hospitals and six ambulatory practices across central Wisconsin. Prior to that, he spent more than 27 years with Cleveland Clinic, including serving as chief operating officer of Cleveland Clinic Martin Health.
