As we settle into 2022 and spring is on the horizon, many of us begin to think about traveling. After 2 years in a pandemic, travel restrictions are finally beginning to loosen, and governments are allowing travelers to enter their countries again. After significant hits, the travel industry is making its comeback and people are hopeful and confident they can finally go on that trip they’ve been dreaming about.

1. An increase in air travel with fewer overall restrictions, but the masks will stay for now.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced new recommendations for COVID-19 travel restrictions, asking countries to ease up and lift certain existing policies. According to officials, have been largely ineffective in stopping the spread of COVID-19 and its variants over a prolonged period of time. The International Health Regulations Committee for WHO recently stated in an interview that COVID-19 travel restrictions “do not provide added value and continue to contribute to the economic and social stress experienced by citizens.”

When it comes to COVID-19 safety measures such as masking, testing, vaccination and quarantining, the World Health Organization said such measures should be “based on risk assessments to avoid placing an excess financial burden on .” Countries have begun to follow suit recently, with the relaxing their policies around COVID-19 testing and Morocco announcing it will end its two-month flight ban in early February.

The fact is that global tourism raised four percent in 2021 and will likely continue to do so throughout 2022. With that being said, it is very important to stay updated with changing travel restrictions and do what you can to keep yourself and others safe.

UNWTO backs WHO call for reopening of borders

The United Nations World Organisation (UNWTO) has welcomed the call of its sister agency, the World Health Organisation (WHO), for restrictions on travel to be lifted or eased.

Citing the varied global responses to the emergence of the of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, the WHO has reiterated that restrictions on travel are not effective in suppressing the international spread.

In line with a recurring warning from the UNWTO against the use of blanket restrictions, the tenth meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee in Geneva earlier this month expressed concern that such measures can cause economic and social harm.

They may also “discourage transparent and rapid reporting of emerging Variants of Concern,” the WHO added.

The committee also noted that measures applied to such as testing, isolation and quarantine, and vaccinations, should be based on “risk assessments and avoid placing the financial burden on international travellers”.

Since 2020, the system has become front and center in ways it never has before. This attention has caused everyday people, healthcare professionals, and even the government to reconsider how the healthcare system functions and how it can be improved to serve the community better. The pandemic proved how important it is to have accessible, scientific-based medical information and research available to the public. By making this sort of information more common and accessible, it will also act as a way to strengthen the trust people have in the healthcare system.

2. Telehealth will take center stage. The benefits that telemedicine provides have become apparent over the years. We will see all sorts of healthcare, such as therapy and urgent care, shifting to a more virtual model, making in-office visits less common and only necessary for specific instances.

3. The accessibility and availability of Mental Health services and care. The importance of behavioral health services has become very apparent in the past few years.
