The AIRR Tech Team went into the woods today to adore The Lovers -- the seventh in our series of 22 informative web pages on the Tarot Trumps or Major Arcana. The card depicts Adam and Eve as a man and woman standing at the border of the Garden of Eden, with the flaming, 12-fruited Tree of Life behind the man and the apple-bearing Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil behind the woman, while overhead the Archangel Uriel may be seen. This trump is the embodiment of the zodiacal sign Gemini, the Twins, with Adam and Eve having been born of one body, and "made for each other" by God. But the card was not always thus, and its history and evolution tell a fascinating story of women's changing roles in society. Catherine Yronwode wrote the page with contributions by Papa Newt and Nagasiva Yronwode. The images are by Pamela Colman Smith, courtesy of Hoodoo Psychics, and Oswald Wirth, courtesy of Thom Rose, and were photo-edited by Nagasiva. Not only is the Forsythia one of the earliest shrubs to blossom in the Spring, it is so eager to bloom that it covers its bare, woody branches with golden flowers well before its green leaves appear. For this reason the Forsythia symbolizes Anticipation, Hope, and Cheerful Expectancy of wonderful future things to come. To give a bouquet of Forsythia branches cut from your own garden is a traditional way to share the joys of Spring, and to bring a living Forsythia plant to new home owners and plant it in their garden is to wish them many years of happiness in that home. This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons will receive a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about rootwork and conjure. Today our conjure documentation comes from a 1932 recording written and performed by J.D. "Jelly Jaw" Short -- one of several blues songs in which the snake (as a metaphor for a man's p***s) and the snake doctor or dragonfly (which is reputed to fly down low to tend to and heal wounded snakes) are combined in the person of a root doctor who specializes in curing male erectile dysfunction and female anorgasmia with herbal medicines. I have written a brief biography of Short and the page includes a portrait, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along.
