Backcountry rider Tyler Lundstedt’s undeniable and contagious passion for snowmobiling in the great Rocky Mountains led him and fellow riders to ever greater heights and challenges. Born in 1987, Tyler came to work in construction and running heavy equipment, but that was just to pay the snowmobiling bills. Ever smiling and always with a helping hand, Tyler would be found engaged in something prod

uctive. Those riding with Tyler would experience the mountains in ways most never will. The more obscure and hard to reach places offer the challenges and skill-building excitement an enthusiastic rider can appreciate. On January 21, 2012 Tyler died in an avalanche near Buffalo Pass in Colorado. The passion he shared with the world is a tremendous legacy. Tyler’s Backcountry Awareness was created to challenge riders to build their skills in safety and preparedness.

Anticipate the Hazard is the first step in the process of gaining intentional experience by making a prediction about the hazard in order to compare it to actual findings at the end of the day. Anticipating the Hazard will also inform the travel plan so that decisions are made when we are able to slow down our thinking and engage the deliberate and rational side of our brain rather than relying on the reactive, intuitive side in the heat of the moment.

Anticipating the hazard first requires identifying and accessing reliable sources for the current and forecasted weather and then discussing key factors that contribute to the hazard and affect travel. Once this information is gathered, identify and locate the avalanche problem(s) in the terrain and determine if they impact the proposed plan. Finally, discuss the avalanche danger trends and summarize the key message for the day.

Understand the Layers

Different storms bring different types of snow throughout the season. Some storms might bring heavy, wet snow while others might bring light, dry powder. Each unique storm forms a layer or multiple layers of the snowpack. In addition, weather events, such as cold temperatures, rain, and time cause those layers to continue to change, either bonding together or becoming more distinct. Sometimes, the right combination of snow and weather events creates a solid, stable snowpack. Other times, the layers don’t fuse together, and we are left with a snowpack that is more likely to avalanche if triggered on steep terrain.

As you conduct your observations, take note of obvious differences between layers, such as the size and shape of the snow crystals in the layers or the hardness of the layers. What is the thickness of the layers? Are there strong layers on top of weak layers?

The Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) classifies terrain into five categories based on slope angle, forest density, slope shape, terrain traps, avalanche frequency/magnitude, starting zone size and density, runout zone characteristics, interaction with avalanche paths, and route options for managing exposure.

• Non-avalanche (Class 0): No known exposure to avalanches. Very low angle or densely forested slopes located well away from avalanche paths, or designated trails/routes with no exposure to avalanches.
• Simple (Class 1): Exposure to low angle or primarily forested terrain. Some forest openings may involve the runout zones of infrequent avalanches and terrain traps may exist. Many options to reduce or eliminate exposure.
• Challenging (Class 2): Exposure to well-defined avalanche paths, starting zones, terrain traps or overhead hazard. Options exist to reduce or eliminate exposure with careful routefinding.
• Complex (Class 3): Exposure to multiple overlapping avalanche paths or large expanses of steep, open terrain. Sustained exposure to overhead hazard. Many avalanche starting zones and terrain traps with minimal options to reduce exposure.
• Extreme (Class 4): Exposure to very steep faces with cliffs, spines, couloirs, crevasses or sustained overhead hazard. No options to reduce exposure and even small avalanches can be fatal.
