When will we break the stigma on mental health? 🧠
Every time this awareness month comes up I ask that question.
While there's been some progress made, we see the same stigma. 🤐
Why do we acknowledge and discuss a wide range of health diagnosis, but remain uncomfortable, judgemental and unable to communicate about mental health? 🧠
Unlike physical ailments that often have visible markers, mental health issues can be hidden behind a smile, making them harder for observers to detect or take seriously. 😶
By treating mental illness with the same urgency and lack of judgment as physical health conditions, we can create environments where seeking help is viewed as a sign of strength.🫂
💚Lead by example:
Demonstrate acceptance in your own behavior and call out stigma when you see or hear it.
💚Encourage professional help:
Gently suggest resources like counseling when you notice a friend or colleague struggling.
💚Equalize health:
Remind others that mental illness is a treatable health condition, no different than heart disease or diabetes.
💚Respect privacy:
If someone confides in you, keep their diagnosis private and let them decide how much of their story to share.
Above all, be respectful, kind, supportive and a good listener.
