🦨 SKUNK SEASON IS HERE! 🐾
I’ve been asked to help de-skunk several dogs over the past few weeks—and even our own dogs have had a few unfortunate run-ins with skunks!
I’m usually booked at least two weeks out, and I’ll be honest… I really don’t want that skunk smell in my grooming van. 😂 It can take forever to get out! I put our dogs on the lawn and use the hose:)
So I thought I’d share the home remedy we use. It works best when used as soon as possible after your dog gets sprayed.
DIY SKUNK REMEDY
Mix together:
• 1 quart (4 cups) of 3% hydrogen peroxide
• ¼ cup baking soda
• 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap
Wearing gloves, work the mixture into your dog’s coat, concentrating on the areas that were sprayed. Keep it completely away from the eyes, nose and mouth. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, then rinse very thoroughly with lukewarm water. Repeat if necessary, then follow with your regular dog shampoo.
A few important tips:
Don’t wet your dog down first—the water can spread the skunk oils around. And make this mixture fresh each time. Never put it in a closed container or save leftovers, because the peroxide and baking soda release gas and can build up pressure.
Hopefully you’ll never need this recipe…but with the number of skunks our dogs have been finding lately, you might want to save it! 🦨🐶
