Some of the most important conversations at AOPO aren't happening on stage—they're happening between the people doing the work every day.

Our team, Brian Osswald and Nathan Reeder, has been connecting with leaders across the donation and transplant community, discussing a question that's becoming increasingly important as DCD and NRP continue to evolve.

Our DCD/NRP teams have been in the room for these cases, and one thing is clear: technology matters, but outcomes ultimately come down to the people executing the process.

If you're attending AOPO, stop by and share your perspective—we'd love to continue the conversation.

🚤 Did We Miss the Boat?

Dr. Mark Slaughter is asking a question that many in the field may be thinking—but few are saying out loud:

🫀 With durable MCS, did the field already miss its window?

As ECMO and temporary support technologies continue to evolve and improve, where does that leave long-term VAD therapy? Has the pendulum shifted toward bridge-to-recovery and temporary support, or is durable MCS still the ultimate destination for advanced heart failure patients?

We'll be listening closely during the Hastings Lecture at the ASAIO 72nd Annual Conference—and we're curious to hear your perspective.

📍 Next Stop: AOPO 2026 Annual Meeting!

NRP isn't a fringe technique anymore. It's becoming the standard of care for DCD — and the OPOs leaning in are seeing it in their placement rates.

Epic's DCD/NRP teams have been in the room for these cases. And what we know for certain: success in NRP comes down to the people executing it. The question the field needs to keep asking: are we investing in the right infrastructure to make NRP sustainable at scale — or are we treating it like a workaround?

💬 What's your OPO doing to build NRP capacity right now?

We're bringing that conversation to AOPO 2026 in Kissimmee this week.
