How to tell if post‑traumatic swelling is lymphedema
After trauma, swelling is normal at first. But lymphedema becomes likely when:

- Swelling persists beyond 3 months
- The limb feels heavy, tight, or thickened
- Skin becomes firm or fibrotic
- Elevation no longer reduces swelling (a hallmark of Stage II lymphedema)
- Imaging (like indocyanine green lymphography) shows dermal backflow, which is specific to lymphedema.

Be aware of therapist who are not certified. Lymphatic drainage looks gentle, but it’s a clinical technique not just a relaxing massage . When someone performs it without proper training.
A few things can go wrong
1.They may use pressure. That’s too deep, which can damage lymph vessels,
2.they might not recognize contraindication like infection blood clots, heart failure
3. they may not understand the directional flow of lymph, which is essential for the technique to work.
