my cholesterol came back elevated and the conversation was about a statin. my TSH was normal, so nobody looked further.
friend to friend, hereās what I wish someone had told me.
1. your liver is what gets rid of extra cholesterol, and your thyroid helps run that whole process. if thyroid function is low, or bile flow is sluggish, cholesterol sits around instead of leaving. so a high number can be a clue that something upstream needs support.
2. thyroid should be one of the areas you consider when cholesterol comes back high (note: cholesterol is multifactorial. genetics, diet, age, and stress all matter. but your thyroid does too).
3. TSH is the standard starting point but alone doesnāt tell you much. a full panel gives you more: free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies.
nobody told me to check my liver or my gut. and that matters, because thatās where most of your T4 converts to active T3.
nobody talked to me about detoxification or whether I was absorbing the nutrients my thyroid needs, like selenium, zinc, and iron. and nobody mentioned any of it as I was going through a thyroid nodule journey.
there are other levers. support your liver, your gut, your detox pathways, nutrient absorption. get real labs drawn. look at the whole body instead of one number.
none of this is me saying your doctor is wrong. medication can have a place and so can intervention. I just want you to know youāre allowed to ask for more and dig deeper.
if you know someone whose cholesterol came back āhighā - send this to her š¤
