HERB OF THE DAY!
ELDERBERRY🪻
Let's talk about it!
🌿 History of Elderberry
Elderberry comes primarily from species of the Sambucus genus, especially European black elder (Sambucus nigra). It has a long history in traditional food and herbal practices across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia.
🏺 Ancient History
Elder trees were valued by ancient European cultures for their berries, flowers, and other parts of the plant. Historical herbal traditions used elder preparations for a variety of everyday ailments, including colds, respiratory complaints, inflammation, and digestive problems.
The plant also developed a strong place in European folklore. Elder trees were sometimes regarded as protective plants and were associated with household and spiritual traditions.
🌿 Medieval Herbal Medicine
During the Middle Ages, European herbalists commonly used elder flowers and berries in traditional preparations. Elderflower was particularly popular in teas and other preparations, while elderberries were made into foods, wines, preserves, and medicinal syrups.
🍯 Elderberry Syrup
Over generations, people developed preparations such as elderberry syrup, often combining cooked elderberries with ingredients such as honey, ginger, or spices. These preparations were traditionally taken during the colder months.
🧪 Elderberry Today
Modern research has investigated elderberry primarily for its antioxidant compounds and possible effects on symptoms of respiratory infections.
