Growing up within systems and later working within them, I’ve had many opportunities to observe how care is experienced, delivered, and shaped.
But it was through my work in birth work—especially through conversations with other birth workers, doulas, and practitioners—that I began to see just how often personal experiences, assumptions, and biases can influence the way care is provided.
That observation extended beyond birth work, into the community spaces we create and the people entrusted to lead them.
It raised a question for me:
How do we create truly supportive spaces if we aren’t willing to examine what we bring into them as space holders?
That question became the foundation for Before You Hold Space.
I created two reflection guides:
For Doulas & Birth Workers
A guide for exploring bias, projection, assumptions, and self-awareness within birth work.
For Practitioners, Community Workers & Leaders
A guide for exploring how these dynamics can shape the spaces we create, lead, and hold for others.
