PJ — The Little Boy Who Refuses to Give Up
Some children are born into an easy story.
PJ was born into a story that would ask him to be stronger than any child should ever have to be.
From the very beginning, PJ has faced challenges that most people will never understand. His journey has included cerebral palsy, dysphagia, eosinophilic esophagitis, dystonia, developmental delays, asthma, sleep apnea, and alopecia. He has spent countless hours in doctors’ offices, hospitals, therapies, procedures, tests, and appointments.
He has had moments when his little body was tired.
Moments when things were hard.
Moments when we wished we could take every struggle away from him.
But PJ kept going.
Every. Single. Time.
He has learned to navigate a world that isn’t always designed for him. He has worked harder for milestones that other children may reach without ever thinking twice. He has fought through medical setbacks, faced procedures with incredible courage, and continued to find reasons to smile.
Another diagnosis. Another thing that made him different.
But PJ has never let being different define him.
Instead, he has turned his differences into his strength.
His hair may have fallen away, but his spirit never did.
PJ is proof that bravery doesn’t always look like standing tall and feeling fearless. Sometimes bravery looks like a little boy getting through another appointment. Another therapy session. Another procedure. Another difficult day.
Sometimes bravery looks like getting back up after you’ve been knocked down.
And sometimes bravery looks like simply smiling when the world has given you every reason not to.
PJ has taught us that strength isn’t measured by how much you can carry without struggling. It’s measured by how many times you keep going when the weight feels too heavy.
He has overcome things that once seemed impossible.
He has celebrated victories that others might consider small, but to our family are monumental.
Every new skill.
Every new word.
Every step forward.
Every adventure.
Every smile.
Every time he says, “I can do it.”
Those are victories.
PJ doesn’t know how extraordinary his story is.
He doesn’t know how many people he inspires simply by being himself.
He doesn’t know that there are people who see his journey and find hope in it.
He just keeps being PJ.
The little boy who loves monster trucks.
The little boy who loves his police car.
The little boy who loves swimming and adventure.
The little boy who sees the world with wonder despite everything he has been through.
And perhaps that’s his greatest lesson:
You can face hard things without letting hard things steal your joy.
PJ’s story isn’t a story about everything that has happened to him.
It’s a story about everything he has risen above.
He is more than his diagnoses.
More than his medical records.
More than the procedures, appointments, therapies, hospital visits, and challenges.
He is a son.
A little brother.
A friend.
An adventurer.
A monster-truck lover.
A fighter.
A warrior.
And most importantly, he is PJ.
Four years into his journey, he has already shown us what resilience looks like.
He has shown us that progress doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful.
That setbacks don’t erase progress.
That being different doesn’t mean being less.
And that sometimes the smallest people have the biggest strength.
There will undoubtedly be more challenges ahead.
There will be hard days.
There will be uncertainty.
There may be moments when we wonder how much more his little body can possibly handle.
But we’ve learned something from PJ.
We don’t have to know what tomorrow holds to believe that he can face it.
Because if his journey has taught us anything, it’s this:
PJ may have been given battles he never asked for, but he continues to fight them with a courage he never knew he had.
He doesn’t need to be fearless.
He just needs to keep going.
And he does.
Our little warrior.
Our fighter.
Our miracle.
Our PJ.
You have overcome more than anyone should ever have to.
And somehow, through it all, you continue to teach the rest of us what it truly means to be strong.
Keep fighting, buddy.
Keep smiling.
Keep dreaming big.
Keep being unapologetically YOU.
Because your story isn’t defined by what you’ve been through.
It’s defined by the fact that you never gave up. 💙💚
