Fall brings plenty of seasonal to-dos, from raking leaves and decorating for Halloween to moving patio furniture and carrying pumpkins. While these activities may seem harmless, they can put extra strain on your back, shoulders, and joints if you're not careful.
Before you tackle your fall checklist, keep these tips in mind:
🔸 Lift with your legs, not your back. Whether you're picking up pumpkins or moving outdoor furniture, bend at your knees, keep the item close to your body, and avoid twisting while lifting.
🔸Be cautious when raking. Switch sides regularly while raking, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, and avoid overreaching to help reduce stress on your back and shoulders.
🔸 Use ladders safely. If you're hanging Halloween decorations or cleaning gutters, always place your ladder on stable, level ground and maintain three points of contact while climbing.
🔸 Break large chores into smaller sessions. Repetitive movements can lead to muscle fatigue. Take breaks, stretch, and change tasks throughout the day to give your body a chance to recover.
🔸 Listen to your body. Soreness after physical activity can be normal, but persistent pain, limited mobility, or discomfort that doesn't improve shouldn't be ignored.
