✨Sustained attention leads to imitation of actions, which then leads to imitation of words ✨
STEP 1: If you want your child to increase their expressive language, first make sure they can sit and play with you using any toy for 2-3 minutes before moving to another task.
STEP 2: Incorporate actions in your play with them & see if they can imitate them. Sing a song with actions (I.e. wheels on the bus, patty cake, etc. ), clap your hands, stomp your feet, roll a ball, etc.
STEP 3: Use short & functional words while you do the actions (i.e. up, down, on, in, go, stop, more, etc.) and *eventually* watch the child attempt to imitate the words.
DISCLAIMER: This won’t happen all in one day. It takes time & consistency. There are also certain diagnoses that can change the way a child develops language skills, so a different approach may be necessary for those kids.
However, as an SLP who has done early intervention for 7 years, I have seen so many success stories by just working in these 3️⃣ areas consistently over several sessions. It really could be this simple 👏🏼👏🏼
