On World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we're highlighting the important role hospice and palliative care play in helping patients and families navigate serious illness.

Both hospice and palliative care focus on comfort, quality of life and support, helping patients receive care that aligns with their goals and wishes. Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and alongside treatment. Hospice care is typically chosen when treatment is no longer working or a patient decides to stop curative treatment for a terminal illness, shifting the focus to comfort, quality of life and support for both the patient and their loved ones.

For this month’s Volunteer Spotlight, we’re featuring Rick Long, a hospice volunteer at our Knoxville, TN, care center. Rick has spent a lifetime performing and sharing his gift for music, playing string instruments like the dulcimer, psaltery and guitar.

Knowing hearing is often one of the last senses to fade, Rick finds meaning in sharing music even with patients who cannot respond. Kind, compassionate and devoted, Rick connects deeply with those he serves and they respond beautifully to him and his dulcimer. Thank you, Rick, for sharing your talents!

[Pictured here with Cindy Steighner, Rick also shares his passion for traditional music through their “Dry Run Dulcimer” YouTube channel!]
