Pets have a special way of making life a little lighter. 💙

In honor of National Pet Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, we asked SCI Team Members to share how their pets support their mental well-being. From comfort and routine to laughter and companionship, these stories are a beautiful reminder of the important role animals can play in our lives.

When Cathy faced the possibility of losing her home, she knew what mattered most: staying in the place she loves. With the right support at the right time, Cathy was able to regain stability, restore her living space, and continue aging in place safely and with dignity.

Her story is a powerful reminder of how person-centered support can make all the difference.

🌞 Summer is here—and so is the need to take care of your skin.

Your skin protects you every day, but increased sun exposure, heat, and environmental factors can put it at risk.

Simple steps—like wearing sunscreen, staying hydrated, and checking your skin regularly—can make a big difference.

📥 We’ve created a helpful guide with easy tips, routines, and signs to watch for.

Today, we’re recognizing Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) — a day that encourages all of us to talk, think, and learn about digital access and inclusion.

At SCI, we believe accessibility online is about people being able to find the information they need independently and with dignity. That’s why we refreshed our website with accessibility and user experience at the forefront, including a focus on plain, consistent language.

We’re also proud to feature Marcy Rye of Wire Media, LLC, who partnered with us on this work.

If you ever run into an accessibility barrier on our website, please let us know — we welcome feedback.

Mental health is part of being human 💙

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well‑being, shaping how we handle stress, build relationships, and make everyday decisions. According to the CDC, about 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. has experienced a mental health condition.

At SCI, we believe mental health matters for everyone, from the people and families we support to our Team Members and beyond. Honoring wellness, connection, and balance reflects our core value that people come first and supports our mission of helping people live the lives they choose.

Support matters. Compassion matters. You matter.

Finding home by staying true to yourself 💙

Mr. Reed has lived a life guided by independence, faith, and freedom. After experiencing significant health challenges, he faced a difficult question: how to remain true to who he is while finding the right place to live and thrive.

With the partnership of his Supports Planner through SCI’s Supports Planning Services (SPS) program, Mr. Reed was able to navigate complex systems, explore his options, and ultimately move closer to the life he envisioned, one rooted in dignity, choice, and self‑direction.

This is person‑centered planning in action.

May is and a reminder for all of us that mental health matters just as much as physical health. At SCI, putting people first means caring for the whole person: well‑being, relationships, and a sense of belonging.

This month (and every month), we encourage you to pause, check in with yourself and those around you, and keep the conversation going. Small moments of kindness, compassion, and connection can make a real difference for ourselves and for our communities.

You’re not alone. Support matters.
