For PTSD Awareness Month, we’re sharing common ways that trauma survivors cope. Some help (like support groups, grounding techniques and medication) and some keep you stuck, (like drinking, anger, and isolation).

Summer can be amazing for families but also completely overwhelming when you or your child has ADHD.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our advice: don’t let routine disappears, keep everyone informed and reminded, and make the most of your unstructured time with confidence-building activities they love.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If your ADHD child struggles when school structure is gone, you are not doing anything wrong. They may just need more predictability and support. If you need help this summer managing, please give us a call!

ADHD & Autism at FCPS

I sent this letter to FCPS's ombudswoman Sabrina Nail.

I am posting it here hoping someone with way deeper pockets than mine can help donate the books to the school system if they would be agreeable to using the resource I recommended:

Ms. Nail,

I am psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in the city of Frederick. My practice cares for a great number of children, parents, young adults, and teachers suffering from ADHD and autism.

I think the schools are doing a good job with including the neurodivergent students as part of the mainstream student body. However, I have noticed over the years that a lot of incidents could have been avoided and our students would feel more at ease and safer at school had the situations been handled differently.

I have noted the following:

Some teachers believe that ADHD only means not sitting still and not focusing. It is way more than that. These two actions are just the tip of the iceberg.

I continuously hear remarks from teachers who feel that accommodating a child with ADHD is giving the child an unfair advantage over others if they are getting good grades. All the people I have met with ADHD are very smart. Failing school is not a criteria for the diagnosis.

I read a recent report by a counselor who was observing a child while an incident happened which escalated based on the teacher's responses.

The staff's responses put the kids in danger as some kids will leave the school unaccompanied and put themselves in harms' way.

My recommendations:

In the third example, the counselor made the same exact recommendations that I would have made in that situation. FCPS already has a knowledgeable counselors mental health staff who can train the rest of the staff on ADHD and autism. They can help teachers understand how to respond to different types of scenarios.

ADHD guru, retired psychologist Dr. Russell Barkley wrote several books on the topic of ADHD. He wrote a small book with less than 100 pages called Managing ADHD in school: The Best Evidence-Based Methods for Teachers. I purchased my copy on Amazon for $25 but I am confident the school system could negotiate a lesser price for a bulk order for its teachers and staff. [Many of the concepts of ADHD are applicable in autism given that the same brain pathways are affected in the two conditions and the conditions are usually comorbid.]--added this to this post.

I have attached some printed resources that I have found over the years that may be helpful and free to distribute to your staff should you find them acceptable.

Medication management is half the battle with these conditions. Creating routine, structured, safe and trusting environment for the students is the other half.

Autism and ADHD are two of the most rewarding conditions for me to treat and manage. It is a night and day difference in the reduction of disruptive behaviors and the increased confidence in individuals, both adults and children, suffering with these conditions when their conditions are understood and they are in a safe and less stimulating environment.

Please feel free to contact me if I could be of any further help or have any questions.

Thank you
Sheila

Do you have chutzpah?

Dust off your new year's resolutions and start making them reality today.

A highlight of my morning is to find the pangram in the NYT Games app Spelling Bee puzzle. On Monday 5/18/2026, it was chutzpah.

We honor those who gave it all and hold space for the families, the brothers and sisters in arms, and the ones still carrying what they went through. If this day feels heavy for you, you’re not alone. Take it slow. Stay grounded🤍

Here’s another Daddy Heaven post, written by a real LLP patient sharing their real healing journey.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Writing has become an outlet for them, but also a way to help others feel less alone in their own struggles with faith, trauma, fear, and learning to move forward.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this piece, they write about choosing gratitude and stepping off the emotional rollercoaster after life changed in an instant.
