Staying upright and active during the first stage of labor has been found to:

-Reduce the 1st stage by approximately 1 hour and 22 mins
-Reduce the likelihood of a c-section
-Less likely to need an epidural

But what does this look like? There are so many ways to remain active during the 1st stage of labor! Lunge variations are just one example. This movement helps move the pelvis in what we call an asymmetrical way to help the baby progress down through the pelvis, which we need for birth! This video shows a kneeling position, but you can also do standing variations if kneeling isn’t comfortable.

What if you’ve had an epidural and cannot walk around? Don’t stress it! There are so many ways you and your birth partner or health care team can help you move while you’re in bed. This sidelying example is one way you can implement a lunge variation after an epidural.

Surgery to remove endometriosis? Getting a hysterectomy? Deep belly breathing can help manage pain, especially the first few weeks after surgery!

This is Poncho. He will shamelessly demand belly rubs until someone obliges and loves every bit of getting spoiled.

Here’s your reminder to do the same because in our clinic we hear this constantly:
-”I hate asking for help.”
-“I didn’t think it was bad enough to come in.”
-“I figured I should just push through it.”

Postpartum. Post c-section. Post-op. Women who have been quietly struggling for months, sometimes years, talking themselves out of getting help because somewhere along the way they learned that needing support was an inconvenience.

It’s not.
Your body just grew and delivered a human. Or went through major abdominal surgery. Or had an organ removed. And you deserve a team to help you through it.

Poncho wasted no time figuring that out. Just saying. 🐾

My opinion: births are births. Medicated. Unmedicated. Cesarean. Vaginal. You grew and birthed a human and are a rockstar for that. If you had a c-section, it does not mean you failed. I challenge you to stop calling this an “unnatural birth.” Be proud of yourself, mama.
