The ride home after the game doesn’t always need a recap. Sometimes your kid already knows about the missed shot, the bad pass, or the time they spent on the bench. What they may need more is a reminder that none of it changes who they are. Their worth isn’t measured in goals, points, playing time, wins, or losses. And when sports start feeling like more pressure than joy, it’s okay to check in on what’s going on beyond the game.

You don’t need the perfect words to check on someone. “Hey, I’ve been thinking about you.” “Want some company?” “How are you, really?” A text, a call, or sitting together for a while can remind someone they don’t have to carry a hard moment alone. This National Su***de Prevention Week, reach out. And if someone tells you they’re struggling, listen and help them connect with support. A day off doesn’t need a to-do list. You don’t have to clean the whole house, catch up on every errand, answer those emails, and somehow become a new person by Tuesday. Rest can look like sleeping in. Sitting outside. Watching something you’ve already seen five times. Doing absolutely nothing useful for a while. If you have time to slow down this Labor Day, you’re allowed to actually use it that way. Rest doesn’t need to be earned first.

Take the rest if you can.

Your schedule is already full. Therapy shouldn’t require rearranging your entire life to make it work. The time, format, therapist fit, and how comfortable you feel all matter. Because support is a lot easier to keep showing up for when it actually works with your life. Finding what works for you might take some adjusting. That’s okay. Therapy is supposed to support your life, not become another thing making it harder.

As the seasons change, our routines often do too. Maybe you're protecting your mental health by saying no a little more often. Taking a real lunch break. Going to bed earlier. Scheduling therapy. Spending less time on your phone. Or simply admitting when you're overwhelmed. Whatever it looks like for you, we'd love to hear it. Fill in the blank: ""This fall, I'm protecting my mental health by _______."" Share your answer in the comments, you might inspire someone else to do the same.

Ellie is here to support your mental health as the seasons change. Find a therapist in your area or online at https://bit.ly/4vriZFD
