Join us this December for a weekend seminar that will help newcomers to the faith bring their whole selves into Islam. This class will lay the foundation for a healthy and robust Muslim identity by guiding attendees through a process of knowing themselves, gaining fundamental religious knowledge, and maintaining their closest ties to family and friends. Based upon the book, Project Lina: Bringing Our Whole Selves into Islam, “Feeling Muslim” is the perfect companion to our longstanding “Being Muslim” class on basic religious knowledge for new Muslims.

Our teacher, Anse Kiashe Pugh, embraced Islam in 1990. She spent 19 years studying abroad before returning to the U.S. in 2013. She serves as a Tafsir instructor at the Ribaat Academic Institute and Vice Chair of the Rabat Board. As a lifelong learner and teacher, she continues to encourage others to seek knowledge and reflect deeply, especially on the Qur’an.

This weekend seminar will be on Saturday and Sunday, December 6th and 7th, from 11 AM to 5 PM CT. Class is open to both men and women. Space is limited to 30 people. Sign up today to guarantee your spot!

A Drop in the Ocean provides deep dives into specific chapters and important themes of the Qur’an. Our latest chapter in this series will build upon last summer’s class on Surah Al-Baqarah by exploring the foundations of faith through the first 32 verses of Surah Al Imran. He is trained in both traditional and academic Islamic studies and has been teaching on the Qur’an, Hadith, Islamic law, and the Prophetic biography across the Chicagoland area for nearly thirty years.

Ibn Umar (ra) reports that The Messenger of God ﷺ said:

“When you meet a hajji on their way home then greet them, shake hands with them and ask them to beg forgiveness of Allah on your behalf before they enter their home, for their prayer for forgiveness is accepted since they are forgiven by Allah for their sins.”

To all of our friends and family who are returning from their Hajj, welcome home!

قبل الله حجك وغفر ذنبك وأخلف نفقتك

May Allah accept your Hajj, forgive your sins, and recompense your expenses. Ameen!

Eid Mubarak from ours to yours!

Eid is a time of celebration, but it is also a time for contemplation and continued worship. In our tradition, contemplation, introspection, and deep reflection are among the highest forms of worship. When engaged in sincerely, they lead to understanding—of God, the human being, the Prophets, revelation, the human heart, and even the events that shape and mold the human experience.

Surah Aal-Imran (3:190-191):

"Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day,- there are indeed Signs for men of understanding."

"Men who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the thought): "Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire."

The 10 days of Dhul Hijjah and their greatness include the day of Eid. Just as we all hoped and prayed for great forgiveness, a new start, or simply glorified our Lord on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, Arafat, today is also a day of greatness. A day of glorification. A day of asking God! As we remember God on this day, keep in mind and think deeply about the fact that we are only honored to remember God because He has remembered us first. In realizing this deeply, we become grateful and truly begin to praise God.

Surah Al-Insan (76:30):

"And you do not will except that Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise."

May Allah bless you all with a joyous Eid with family and friends. Ameen.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the sacrifice of Abaraham. Abraham was asked by God to endure the ultimate test; sacrificing his son.

This heavy task compelled Abraham to make an emotional sacrifice for the sake of God, and once he submitted, God reminded him that it was the sacrifice of the heart that was desired over the body. Once the heart submits to God, the body follows suit.

From that day on until the end of time, God sends his peace and blessings upon Abraham, which is verified by the Final Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ. We pray five times a day and in our prayer we send peace upon Abraham paying tribute to the faith of Abraham and his family.

May our hearts be in the care of God, and may our sacrifices be recognized by Him.

Arafah, the ninth of Dhul Hijjah, is the holiest day in our calendar. The Prophet ﷺ tells us it is a day on which Allah descends to the lowest heaven and boasts to His angels about the pilgrims making Hajj. It is a day, for the rest of us, on which God rewards our fasting with the expiation of our sins from the previous and the upcoming year.

The Prophet ﷺ instructs us to take advantage of this day by reciting the invocation above, the most excellent thing that any of the prophets ever said. Whether you are making Hajj this year or not, whether you are fasting on 'Arafah or not, keep this invocation on your tongue throughout the day.

May Allah accept and bless us through our efforts this month. Ameen!

06/05/2025

The Day of ‘Arafah is a special day considered by some scholars to be the best day of the year and it occurs on the 9th day in the month of Dhul Hijjah. It is a day for believers to express their gratitude for guidance and seek forgiveness for their misdeeds.

It is the day that our souls first testified to God’s reality before entering this present life. It is the shahada or witnessing in this life that renews that covenant. The Prophet ﷺ highly encouraged us to fast on this special day and informed us that the reward of that fast is forgiveness for the misdeeds of the past year and the year to come.

You can observe this fast in the same manner you would day during Ramadan. Increase your good deeds and worship on this blessed day. Prepare your heart and mind for Eid on the following day, the 10th of Dhul Hijjah.

The Hajj is a once in a lifetime journey that many of our brothers and sisters will be taking in the coming days. But the story behind it is one that we can all reflect upon and benefit from. This article, Learning How to Fail From The Hajj, looks at the lessons we may take from our mother Hajjar as we endure our own trials and apparent failures on our journeys to God.

Peace and blessings,
