Vein disease is often called a women's issue, but up to 45% of men experience some form of venous disease in their lifetime. Most wait years longer than they should before seeking care.

Heaviness, aching, swelling, restless legs, and skin changes near the ankles are not normal parts of aging. They are signs that the valves in your leg veins may need attention. Left untreated, venous disease tends to get worse, not better.

This Men's Health Month, encourage the men in your life to take that first step. Modern vein treatments are minimally invasive, performed in our office, and most patients are back to normal activity the same day.

A red, tender, cord-like streak along a vein under your skin? It might be superficial thrombophlebitis, a combination of vein inflammation and a small blood clot in a vein close to the surface.

It's fairly common and usually manageable with compression, elevation, gentle movement, and anti-inflammatories. But it can sometimes extend deeper, which is why it's worth getting checked. Existing varicose veins, long flights, dehydration, smoking, and certain medications can all raise the risk.

If you notice the signs, especially after travel or a period of immobility, don't wait it out. A simple evaluation can rule out anything more serious and put you on the right path.

Birth control and vein health are more connected than many women realize. Estrogen can influence how your veins behave and how your blood clots, which is why certain hormonal methods carry a slightly higher clot risk than others, especially when paired with smoking, family history, or existing vein issues.

For most women, the absolute risk stays low. Staying active, hydrated, and informed makes a real difference. So does an honest conversation with your provider about your history.

This Women's Health Month, we're encouraging the women we care for to ask the questions and know the answers. If you have leg symptoms or questions about your circulation, a vein evaluation is a great place to start.

Long hours at a desk job can quietly take a toll on your vein health. When you are stuck in a sedentary lifestyle, your calf muscle pump stops working, leading to blood pooling in the lower legs. This can cause uncomfortable leg swelling, heaviness, and even the development of varicose veins. Over time, poor circulation may progress to chronic venous insufficiency or increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Protecting your legs doesn't require a total schedule overhaul. Try to stand up every hour and perform simple ankle circles or calf raises to get your blood moving. Many professionals find that wearing compression stockings provides the extra support needed to prevent fluid buildup during high-demand work periods. Avoiding crossed legs and staying hydrated also helps maintain healthy blood flow. Don't let a busy season compromise your vascular well-being. Small, intentional movements throughout the day are the best defense against the physical strain of prolonged sitting.

Happy Earth Day. Here is a connection you might not expect: many eco-friendly habits are also some of the best things you can do for your veins.

Walking instead of driving activates your calf muscles, which are the primary pump for pushing blood back up from your legs. A diet rich in plant-based foods like berries, leafy greens, and whole grains provides the nutrients your vein walls need to stay strong. Gardening keeps your body moving in natural, varied ways that support circulation. And staying hydrated throughout the day keeps your blood flowing smoothly.

The beauty of it is that none of these changes require a major lifestyle overhaul. Small shifts in how you move, eat, and hydrate create a positive cycle for both your health and the environment.

If your legs have been feeling heavy, achy, or swollen, or if you have noticed changes in your veins, we are here to help. Schedule a consultation to learn more about your vein health.

Rising temperatures can be tough on your vascular wellness. Heat causes blood vessels to dilate, which often leads to leg swelling and discomfort. If you have varicose veins or spider veins, you may notice symptoms worsening during the summer. Maintaining proper hydration is your first line of defense to keep blood flowing easily. Wearing breathable compression stockings can also provide essential support for summer veins. Regular walking helps your circulation by activating the calf muscle pump.

Seasonal vein care is all about staying cool and moving often. Try elevating your legs at the end of a hot day to reduce fluid pooling. Proactive vein health habits allow you to enjoy the sunshine without the heavy, achy legs. Your veins work hard in the heat, so give them the extra care they deserve this season.

Collagen is the quiet foundation of your vascular health. It is the primary protein that provides vein wall strength and structure. This essential connective tissue keeps your veins flexible and resilient under pressure. As we age, declining levels can lead to aging veins and lost vein elasticity. Weakened walls often result in venous insufficiency, causing varicose veins and spider veins. To support your vein structure, prioritize nutrients like vitamin C to boost natural production. Good circulation depends on these walls staying strong and firm.

Healthy habits and proper nutrition are key to maintaining your veins for the long term. Small changes today can prevent significant discomfort in the future. Don't let your veins lose their bounce.

If you notice a warm, red, or tender area on your leg, you may be experiencing phlebitis. This condition involves vein inflammation that can range from mild discomfort to a serious medical concern. While superficial thrombophlebitis occurs just under the skin, it is important to rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Blood clots in deeper veins are dangerous and can lead to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Common symptoms include leg swelling, pain, and visible redness over varicose veins. To protect your vascular health, a doctor may perform a venous ultrasound to check your blood flow. Treatment often includes compression stockings, elevation, and staying hydrated to improve vein health. Early diagnosis is the best way to prevent complications and keep your legs feeling their best. Don't ignore persistent pain or swelling in your limbs.
