If you’ve been chasing your ferritin number for months with nothing to show for it, you are not doing something wrong. There may just be more going on than iron alone can fix.
Viruses and bacteria are resourceful. Epstein-Barr will happily use the iron your body is storing to keep itself going.
An infection like H. pylori changes the entire environment your stomach needs to properly break down and absorb iron in the first place.
And when there’s bacterial overgrowth in your gut, strep in particular, your body may not be absorbing much of anything you’re taking in, iron included.
I completely get how frustrating this can be. If you’ve got one or more of these working against you, you can take iron every single day and still not see it get better.
This is exactly the kind of thing worth testing for before you keep adding more supplements to the pile.
